After closing its first development year, the Qu-PIC - Horizon Europe project enters 2025 with a productive consortium meeting hosted by VLC Photonics (Hitachi Group) in the marvelous city of Valencia. With motivation and enthusiasm, the 12 partner institutions of the Qu-PIC project shared their latest advancements toward providing Europe with a supply chain of quantum building blocks for photonic integrated circuits (#PICs), a technology with the potential to transform computing ?? , communications ?? , and a wide variety of sensing systems ??. In Qu-PIC, the #Al?O? integrated photonics platform was chosen for its excellent low propagation loss and wide spectral range from ultraviolet (200?nm) to mid-infrared, serving as the backbone for quantum PIC development. Key building blocks include #multiwavelength #tunable #lasers operating at 399?nm, 411?nm, and 935?nm, #UVC #external #cavity #lasers emitting at 280?nm, #squeezed #photon sources, and #singlephoton #detectors. Additional elements include programmable #ASICs, advanced packaging and assembly techniques, and an open #PDK that integrates these components, fostering rapid innovation and ensuring a robust European supply chain for quantum photonics. Do not miss Qu-PIC's developments and stay tuned to our social media and website (https://www.qu-pic.eu/). Photonics Integrated Circuits (PICs) leverage wafer-level manufacturing and advanced microfabrication technologies, which can enable next-generation scalable quantum applications by reducing the size and cost of current quantum settings. At Qu-PIC - Horizon Europe, we are pioneering several innovative light sources. One of our targeted breakthroughs is the first integrated #external #cavity #UVC #laser, emitting at 280 nm. This innovation requires the development of thin-film AlGaN-based gain sections, along with a lift-off process for μ-transfer printing these gain sections onto the PICs. To meet these technical challenges, Qu-PIC - Horizon Europe has welcomed Dr. ?sa Haglund, Full Professor of Photonics, Microtechnology, and Nanoscience at Chalmers University of Technology. Professor Haglund and her research group have recently secured a prestigious grant from the Vetenskapsr?det / Swedish Research Council to demonstrate the world’s first electrically driven deep-UV VCSEL. This new project builds on their prior innovations, which include a unique membrane technology for crafting low-loss cavities with precise cavity length control and the world’s first electrically driven resonant-cavity UV LED. By integrating the extensive expertise of Professor Haglund's group with our esteemed partners, Technische Universit?t Berlin and Ghent University, we are poised to trigger a transformative leap in quantum innovation.
