Curious, trying to be clever, championing innovation

With the rapid advancement in Quantum computing, the public-key based encryption ecosystem is at risk. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recommends symmetric key algorithms with a 256-bit key size to be Quantum safe. The traditional symmetric method requires a key exchange, and that is a risky operation as if the key is intercepted your communications can easily be eavesdropped. From MWC I covered an Italian company providing a solution for Telcos over Fiber. At NVIDIA GTC I met with co-founder and CTO Denis Mandich and Greg G. of Qrypt. They offer the dual package of: 1. Quantum Random Number Generation taking the advantage of quantum entropy to generate truly random numbers via quantum mechanical process - now that's gonna be random. 2. Using quantum mechanics, multiple parties can independently generate the identical encryptions keys at their respective endpoints without transmitting keys over a network. There is no key exchange. Go AES-256 or ChaCha20-256, and for now good to go. They package it as an SDK in a form that if you have the hardware on your endpoints you can locally generate keys, and offer it as a cloud service - where NVIDIA comes into play. Most of their business is in government but they are gaining traction in healthcare. As AI models with a lot of secret sauce are distributed and utilized on the edge, Qrypt has the potential to be the infrastructure to effectively protect these models from MITM and Quantum computing-driven decryption attacks.

Day three at #GTC was nothing short of inspiring! The Qrypt team was inundated with interest from potential partners ready to transition to quantum-secure solutions. It was a remarkable opportunity to engage with industry pioneers at the intersection of AI and quantum technology. As quantum computing evolves rapidly, cybersecurity and Q-day drive the discussions for stronger cryptographic architecture. This year's remarkable advancements highlight the crucial need to acknowledge that AI training data cannot be protected using the same technology that sends funny cat videos. The convergence of AI and quantum technologies is not merely transformative; it is foundational for the next generation of technological innovations. This synergy compels us to collectively and proactively enhance our security frameworks to stay ahead of emerging threats. The number of quantum sessions this week has been excellent, and Jensen’s panel with quantum computing leaders tomorrow will be fireworks. My favorite quip of the day came from a visitor to the Qrypt booth: We were “quantum-aware” last year, but we’re now “quantum-informed.” Two more exciting days ahead. Thanks to the NVIDIA team for including Qrypt again and for their incredible support. #quantum #cryptography #encryption?#PQC?#QKD?#quantumcomputing #cybersecurity?#nationalsecurity?#nationaleconomicsecurity?#AI #Nvidia #GTC

Last week saw the public announcement by Microsoft of their Majorana 1 topological quantum processor, reinforcing the acceleration in quantum computing capability that we have recently observed. In the document attached to this post, Denis Mandich, CTO of Qrypt, and I consider the legacy of the Italian physicist Ettore Majorana for our future data security, manifest in the quantum processor now bearing his name. In addition to the known research being conducted in the interests of Western national security, we also reflect on the recent report published by Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), which emphasizes the risk posed by China's significant national research effort around quantum technology and its strategic applications. Within our assessment we address a little physics as background, what we regard as a genuinely big announcement by Microsoft, an uncertain future that we must face together, and a renewed imperative for rapid adoption of post-quantum cryptographic (PQC) security. The physics relevant to the Majorana 1 quantum processor is complex and there is further research needed to deliver the scalable quantum computation that Microsoft and their industry partners Quantinuum and Atomic Computing envisage. We are grateful for the accessible discussion of the science behind "topoconductors" that has been provided via separate contributions by the Nobel Laureate frank Wilczek and Jonathan Baugh that we have linked in our analysis. The successful outcome and the scientific perseverance characterizing the extensive research effort that has been undertaken by Microsoft and its partners is to be applauded. The implications for quantum information security, computational advantage, and the dynamics of great power competition, however, are yet to be fully understood. #quantumcomputing #datasecurity #nationalsecurity #PQC #QRNG Fortanix Qrypt

It should be more apparent than ever that those deeply involved in developing quantum technologies, particularly in new modalities like topological qubits, have the only meaningful insights into Q-day or Y2K. Microsoft's advancement is a remarkable leap in the field - long theorized but not previously revealed to the public. The next breakthrough will be quantum’s "DeepSeek" moment, which will likely emerge from China. Will this critical development be shared openly? While AI offers substantial benefits, the strategic advantages conferred by quantum computing will be transformative, particularly for those with access to this technology. Quantum computers' capabilities are not an incremental improvement—they are a fundamental shift that could redefine competitive landscapes across industries, not the least of which is intelligence agencies' impact on global power structures. #quantum #cryptography #encryption #AI

A couple reflections on the quantum computing breakthrough we just announced... Most of us grew up learning there are three main types of matter that matter: solid, liquid, and gas. Today, that changed. After a nearly 20 year pursuit, we’ve created an entirely new state of matter, unlocked by a new class of materials, topoconductors, that enable a fundamental leap in computing. It powers Majorana 1, the first quantum processing unit built on a topological core. We believe this breakthrough will allow us to create a truly meaningful quantum computer not in decades, as some have predicted, but in years. The qubits created with topoconductors are faster, more reliable, and smaller. They are 1/100th of a millimeter, meaning we now have a clear path to a million-qubit processor. Imagine a chip that can fit in the palm of your hand yet is capable of solving problems that even all the computers on Earth today combined could not! Sometimes researchers have to work on things for decades to make progress possible. It takes patience and persistence to have big impact in the world. And I am glad we get the opportunity to do just that at Microsoft. This is our focus: When productivity rises, economies grow faster, benefiting every sector and every corner of the globe. It’s not about hyping tech; it’s about building technology that truly serves the world. Read more about our discovery, and why it matters, here: https://aka.ms/AAu76rr

Setting aside the debate over the origin, details, resources, and costs associated with DeepSeek’s AI, the salient point is benchmarks indicate no meaningful improvement over competitors, including OpenAI, Gemini, and Anthropic. While the AI hype cycle demands breathless headlines celebrating a 0.9% gain in self-serving metrics, there are no signs of progression beyond the same plateau. Highly biased and censored AI is a step backward, similar to Gemini’s absurdly humiliating initial release. More on this later. Recall the naivete of Sam Altman’s own words and the laughter it must have precipitated in the CCP politburo: “It’s totally hopeless to compete with us on foundation models you shouldn’t try…” The vast number of AI-generated news articles on DeepSeek prove this is pure indigenous innovation by a scrappy team of hedge fund engineers working on a shoestring budget who would never try to manipulate the stock market?! Under no circumstances would they accept illegally acquired training data from the Chinese government nor use similarly acquired hardware and IP at no cost to promote state-sponsored propaganda. None of China’s vast industrial espionage machinery in the US had anything to do with this advance, regardless of how many corporate spies the FBI arrests. The entire USIC’s alarming proclamations, warnings, and emergency remediation alerts on China’s thievery, hacking, operations, and so on, must be overreactions, and there is no proof DeepSeek was a beneficiary? The real mushroom we see grow is the commentary from this otherwise intelligent community about the immaculate birth of DeepSeek et al which is actually from AI, not critical human thinkers. The writing is based on DeepSeek’s paper and a few benchmarks, deliberately excluding contextual realities. Their kids will be working for Huawei one day instead of FANG and they won’t understand how it happened. Don’t worry, DeepSeek, not ChatGPT, will explain it to you. Expect a quantum surprise in the near future because the same “expert” assessments will be profoundly wrong about China, with devastating economic consequences (but they meant well). The difference is there is no propaganda incentive to make it public until it has been fully exploited for intelligence gain. When “harvest now, decrypt later” is operationalized, the only public indicator will be the accelerating transfer of wealth to China and the faster extinction of Western companies playing by the rules. Cybersecurity and our current architecture have demonstrably failed. Incremental improvements are band-aids in a gunfight and will not help. Strong quantum-secure end-to-end-encryption will. Anything less is implicitly an exploitable back door for someone. #quantum #cryptography #encryption? #PQC? #QKD? #quantumcomputing #cybersecurity? #nationalsecurity? #nationaleconomicsecurity? #AI https://lnkd.in/eCeCFNux
