Congratulations to Jo Benn for securing an acquittal on a conspiracy to murder trial. The client was charged with conspiring with two others to murder Kane Khan. Fraser Coxhill and Paul Raudnitz KC of QEB Hollis Whiteman Chambers advised on the matter. Jo Benn provided initial advice and representation at the Police Station during his interview. Jo retained conduct of this matter throughout and prepared the case for trial, attended upon the client regularly whilst he was on remand, taking instructions from the client as the evidence was served by the Prosecution and ensuring the case was fully prepared for counsel and King’s Counsel. BK was acquitted of both counts that he faced at trial by unanimous jury. Jo commented, 'A case of this nature and seriousness has very high stakes and significant consequences for the client if they are convicted. I am delighted that we were able to secure an acquittal for the client in these circumstances. A conviction in this case would have led to a term of imprisonment of around 20 – 25 years. I am delighted that BK can now begin to move on with his life.'

This International Women’s Day, we stand united to #AccelerateAction towards gender equality in the legal profession and beyond. ? Hear from zoe johnson KC, Fallon Alexis and Charlotte Godber, three incredible female barristers at QEB Hollis Whiteman who have not only broken barriers but continue to push for change. In their feature, they share: - What inspired them to pursue a career in law - The challenges they’ve overcome on their path - The advice they would offer to those coming after them ? As we reflect on the IWD 2025 theme, it’s clear that we must act swiftly to overcome the barriers that still hold women back. Congratulations to Alexa Clement for securing a Not Guilty verdict for a client falsely accused of sexual assault. Alexa instructed Charlotte Godber of QEB Hollis Whiteman, on what Charlotte describes as her 'shortest ever Crown Court trial'. A full acquittal of Mr C was secured in one hour and 56 minutes, after CCTV footage and cross-examination of the Complainant revealed that Mr C had been falsely accused of a sexual assault. The assault was said to have occurred after an awards ceremony in a central London hotel. A Judge, sitting at Inner London Crown Court, directed the jury to find Mr C Not Guilty after accepting Charlotte’s legal submission that, at the close of the prosecution case there was no case for Mr C to answer. Alexa said, 'Charlotte picked up the case quite late in the day but got to grips with everything and reassured the client that he was in safe hands. Through Charlotte’s skilful questions in cross examination, and use of CCTV footage, the Judge and the jury came to see that the witness had been lying about what had happened. After being directed to find the defendant "not guilty" jurors came up to Mr C before leaving court, they shook his hand, some expressed their disbelief that he had ever been charged.' #LegalWins #ReedsSolicitors #CriminalDefence #SexualOffences

Six defendants have been prosecuted for Murder and Robbery. On the evening of 14 March 2024, Michael Obasi – a son, father and brother – was reported missing by his family. His body was discovered two days later in a park by a dog walker. A Police investigation determined that he had been robbed, assaulted and left at the scene. The prosecution case was based on CCTV evidence tracking the movements of the six defendants before and after the incident. Footage showed them entering the park together and later leaving in two groups – with one in the possession of Mr. Obasi’s bank cards, the other carrying some of his belongings. DNA evidence also linked two younger defendants, aged 14 and 16 at the time, to the attack. Following a trial before Mr Justice Wall and a jury, all six defendants were convicted of murder. Three of them were also found guilty and convicted of attempted robbery on 15 January 2024 of another man. Peter Finnigan QC of QEB Hollis Whiteman, leading Kathryn Arnot Drummond of 5 King's Bench Walk, was instructed by the Complex Casework Unit at CPS West Midlands in the prosecution of this case.
