This incredible feat marks the first successful use of Zhejiang University's brain implants to enable writing Chinese characters. ???? The patient controls a robotic hand with his thoughts to write the Chinese characters, offering new hope for those who have lost speech and mobility to communicate again. ?? Bit of facts about this brain-computer interface! → Unlike alphabetic writing, implementing Chinese script through a brain-computer interface is much more complex. → The volunteer imagines the writing process, which is reflected in the motor area's neuronal activity. Then the system analyzes these signals to capture the intended writing path and control the robotic arm to write. China's high-tech sector is increasingly driving the country's economy. Bloomberg Economics estimated that 2023's high-tech demand in sectors like medicine, advanced equipment, and IT, including R&D, totaled 18 trillion yuan ($2.5 trillion), or 14.3% of GDP. ?     If you are actively pursuing new AI use cases in your organization, you are part of a cohort of leaders across all industries. In fact, 82% of C-suite leaders in a recent MIT Technology Review Insights survey said that “scaling AI or generative AI use cases to create business value is a top priority for our organization.” And 80% of chief data officers believe generative AI will transform their business environment, according to work from Tom Davenport, a visiting scholar at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. At MIT Sloan, our faculty members and researchers are exploring AI from every angle that matters to leaders — data integration, workforce development, change management, organizational culture, entrepreneurial opportunity, and ethical and regulatory implications, among others. Their work is yielding crucial insights organizations will need as AI — and especially generative AI — reshapes our industries and our work.     There are several lessons to learn from early implementations of generative AI, according to Aamer Baig, a senior partner at McKinsey. Speaking at the recent MIT Sloan CIO Symposium, Baig said generative AI presents an opportunity to transform and reimagine business and technology functions in ways that weren’t possible before. At the same time, key issues need to be resolved for it to deliver value beyond early chatbot and content-generation use cases. In a 2024 McKinsey global survey on AI, 65% of respondents said that their organizations were regularly using generative AI in at least one business function, up from one-third last year. Yet McKinsey found that only 10% of responding companies had successfully implemented generative AI at scale for any use case.
