    Ironically, in a somewhat "hype-y" industry (quantum computing, comms, and sensing, broadly), DCVC-backed Q-CTRL is not hype-y *enough* They're already field testing quantum inertial navigation systems at mind-blowing SWaPC across multiple modalities (magnetic, granitic, etc), alone and in combination.     Great insight into product management challenges for quantum companies from our panelists at QED-C?’s 2025 Spring Plenary: John Burgoyne (Oxford Instruments plc), James Guilmart (Q-CTRL) and Mike Piech (Rigetti Computing), who joined us for the Quantum Business Edge breakout session. Key insights included: Measuring the success of quantum products beyond the typical high-level metrics such as revenue, profit and pipeline dynamics is challenging due to the early nature of the market and the degree to which customers require product customization. Yet, product managers are trying out interim (albeit imperfect) metrics that give an earlier view of how well a product is doing before they get to the end of the year or quarter, such as implementation or internal delivery quality. Some have adopted OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) and other internal goal-setting tools that not only improve overall execution but can also help uncover meaningful early success metrics. It’s a work in progress, but essential. “Nothing is more useless than a four-year old on-premises quantum computer,” stated Bob Sorensen. “How do you keep them up to date?” The panelists explained that RFPs require vendors to upgrade and keep current over the life of the contract, which further drives the need for modular architecture. Even infrastructure software vendors are required to maintain performance levels over time. A shift from product-driven to market-driven market strategy enables sharper customer targeting and aligns buyer pain points with product, as opposed to leading with the product to chase customers.     Quantum and classical compute will need to operate symbiotically in order to get the maximum gains from a quantum computer. Known as hybrid compute, quantum’s distinct capabilities can be underpinned by robust classical computing to generate powerful, cost-effective and, importantly, near term advantages. In a new collaboration with Q-CTRL and NVIDIA, we are exploring how our hardware, alongside Q-CTRL’s Fire Opal and NVIDIA’s platform, can dramatically speed up layout ranking for our QPUs of today and tomorrow: reducing computational time and cost for this critical task. - The challenge: Complex computing tasks involved in executing quantum applications on real hardware can create a bottleneck, hindering our progress toward achieving quantum advantage. - The outcome: In partnership with Q-CTRL and NVIDIA, we have begun to leverage advanced accelerated computing technology to solve key computational bottlenecks in error suppression that we foresee on the path to quantum advantage. - The Impact: 300,000x reduction in classical compute cost by leveraging NVIDIA GPUs and accelerated libraries for layout ranking.     Quantum computing holds immense promise but the limited scale and error susceptibility of quantum hardware has long delayed its practical benefits. In this talk, we show how quantum control delivered by software is helping accelerate the adoption of quantum technologies by dramatically improving hardware performance and algorithmic outcomes. While this is not yet superior to classical algorithms, we continue to drive the scale of effective calculation towards this advantage threshold to empirically assess the impact of quantum computing on high-value commercial problems. We will highlight how our quantum-hardware-optimized algorithmic solvers are allowing us to tackle complex optimization challenges in transport, defence logistics, and network security at world-record scales. https://buff.ly/LCmc4Yt

    Technology Manager: Quantum Theory

    Been great working with NVIDIA and Q-CTRL on using GPUs for accelerated quantum compilation. Quantum compilers are full of problems that are parallelised well and full of graph problems, well suited for GPUs (especially GraceHopper, that machine is pretty remarkable). Working across expertise from quantum hardware, quantum software and GPU optimisation is only going to become more important. Just the beginning, more to come, watch this space ??
