  • Love the animation feature of Matplotlib. Beam on compression-only springs for varying beam stiffnesses. Animations can help visualize an extra dimension in your data. For sensitivity analysis and optimization, they can be quite useful, and it’s easy to do with Python. What you need to learn: ??Python fundamentals ??Matplotlib basics Then you’re good to go!   • How would you optimize this? Each spring has a max axial capacity. You want to minimize the beam. You make the beam less stiff -> The forces on springs close to the point load increase. This was a very real issue I encounted on a project where we optimized a concrete ground slab supported on styrofoam. Python is great in this case becaue 1: It let's you loop over many variations. 2: You can either use FE packages directly in Python or send data to your favorite FE software to perform the calculations. So how would you normally approach this without Python? PS: This is a case from the course.

  • Learning programming is about experimentation. As soon as you know the basics, anything you want to do is possible. It's great to see that students like Sandip Deb is going beyond the scope of the course and explores API's. Which makes me think.... do we need an API course?

    In higher seismic zones and general conditions, keeping RC beams singly reinforced enhances ductility. After initial analysis, we can check design moments and explore beam depth or width options. This program helps determine limiting moment capacities for different depths, aiding efficient beam sizing. I developed it as part of my Python learning for structural engineers.
