WILDFIRE RESEARCH We’re advancing research in two areas critical to fire modeling: weather and fuel. Building on that body of work, we’re developing next-generation models to provide more accurate wildfire forecasts for the next week—and the rest of the century. OPEN SCIENCE Funded by the California Energy Commission, Pyregence is firmly committed to the principles of open science. We believe that with more people examining a problem, the greater the chances it will be solved.

We published a new paper where we think about the fuel challenge facing fire-prone forests as widespread tree mortality occurs in many locations. Dealing with the abundance of dead biomass that is building up in our forests following mortality events will take creativity. In our paper we run a few different scenarios of increasing burn frequency. Regardless of what choices we make in different locations, choosing to leave the accumulation on the landscape to burn under extreme fire weather conditions is a choice that will commit us to substantial forest loss. doi.org/10.1002/fee.2801

This Labor Day, as we celebrate the legacy of the American labor movement and honor the hard work that built our nation, let’s also focus on protecting the landscapes we cherish. With wildfire seasons becoming more severe, it’s crucial to prioritize safety while enjoying the outdoors. Whether you’re hiking, camping, or simply relaxing outside, take steps to prevent wildfires: properly extinguish campfires, avoid parking on dry grass, and stay informed about local fire conditions. Let’s use this holiday not only to rest but also to commit to wildfire preparedness and protect the natural spaces that give us so much. ???? #LaborDay #ForestResilience #WildfirePrevention

?? The First Street Foundation Wildfire Model (FSF-WFM) has unveiled a powerful new methodology for estimating 30-year, climate-adjusted wildfire hazards across the contiguous U.S. at an unprecedented 30 m resolution. This innovative approach combines state-of-the-art wildfire science with computational efficiency to generate high-resolution hazard maps for 2022 and 2052. Utilizing Monte Carlo simulations, the FSF-WFM calculates burn probability, flame length, and ember spread, integrating augmented LANDFIRE fuel data and historical wildfire ignition points. By incorporating machine-learning models to estimate fuels in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) and adjusting for future climate conditions based on IPCC projections, this model offers a detailed, forward-looking view of wildfire risks. Pyregence is proud to contribute to this model, and several Pyregence team members worked on this research, including David Saah, Carrie R. Levine, Chris Lautenberger, Owen M. Doherty, Carl Rudeen, Kyle D. Woodward, Gary W. Johnson, and Andrea McMahon. ???? ?? Wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe, highlighting the urgent need for reliable tools to predict and manage their spread. In a recent study, researchers, including Pyregence team members Gary Johnson, Valentin Waeselynck, Shane Romsos, Jordan Combs, and David Saah, have taken a step forward by improving fire tracking algorithms and developing a sub-daily fire progression database using VIIRS active detections in the western U.S. This comprehensive database includes crucial details like fire perimeters, active fire pixel locations, and active fire lines. These attributes are then used to evaluate and enhance fire spread models, including ELMFIRE and GridFire, which are integrated into the PyreCast active fire tool. This work represents a significant advancement in wildfire prediction and management, paving the way for more effective strategies to combat these devastating events. ????
