???Celebrating another Black Icon of the Pacific Northwest??? Pyramide teamed up with Northwest African American Museum to create an animated video highlighting Black Icons of the Pacific Northwest. This week of Black History Month, let’s shine a spotlight on the incredible William Grose, a Black pioneer who left an indelible mark on the Seattle-area. ?? Following an adventurous career in the Navy, California gold mines, the Underground Railroad, and serving as a steward on a sea vessel, Grose moved to the Washington Territory in 1860. As the city’s second Black resident, he quickly became a successful businessman. He opened a hotel and restaurant on Yesler Way and acquired one of the largest land holdings in the city. Grose was one of the first Black people to buy property, purchasing 12 acres from Henry Yesler along E Madison St. After gradually selling much of his property to other wealthy black residents, this area became the northern section of what will eventually become Seattle’s Central District. ???Exciting News!????Pyramide recently partnered with Northwest African American Museum to create an animated video highlighting Black Icons of the Pacific Northwest. In honor of Black History Month, let’s shine a spotlight on the incredible Ernestine Anderson. ???? Ernestine was a legendary jazz and blues singer whose career spanned more than six decades. As a teenager at Garfield High School in Seattle, she quickly immersed herself in the local jazz scene, performing in Garfield’s jazz band and at clubs in Seattle’s Central District. Soon, she was touring with renowned jazz musicians and eventually signed to Quincy Jones’ record label, another Garfield High alum.?Ernestine solidified her place as one of jazz’s most influential African American female vocalists, leaving a lasting impact on the cultural landscape of the Pacific Northwest. York was a trailblazing frontiersman, hunter, and likely the first African American to cross the continent. As a vital member of the Corps of Discovery, York’s skills in handling firearms, hunting game, and navigating trails and waterways were indispensable. Despite being enslaved by Captain William Clark, York’s contributions were crucial to the success of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
