Seattle Public Schools (“SPS”) has agreed to pay $16,000,000 to our client, a former Garfield High School student, who was sexually abused by two former basketball coaches at the school. This is the largest injury settlement in the?SPS’ history.?According to Partner Tomás Gahan, SPS failed in its responsibility to adequately scrutinize its employees, both during the hiring process and when it received reports of problematic behavior of its staff: “There can't be this environment where coaches are able to insulate their interactions and the relationships with these players,” said Gahan, like traveling without parents and chaperones knowing students’ whereabouts at all times, and coaches being allowed to send students private text messages. ? PWRFL’s Paul Sewell spoke with The Seattle Times about the settlement: “While she is relieved by the outcome, our client will never reclaim her childhood,” said Sewell, the attorney. “She hopes that the settlement will spark meaningful change so that no other child will ever have to suffer the same pain and trauma.” ?
