Reflections from Mikaela Lessnau on our collaboration with the Columbia Climate School, where students learn how scientists are tackling climate change through cutting-edge research, education, and solutions-oriented projects.?
MSc Sustainability Management, Columbia University | ESG Advisory and Sustainability Consulting | Passionate about Climate Finance, Environmental Infrastructure, and Regenerative Agriculture
For the past 3 weeks I have been working with the Columbia Climate School in managing 60 students through its pre-college summer program on climate and sustainability in Vermont. I am so grateful to Putney Student Travel for trusting me to work alongside 12 teammates - some of the smartest and coolest people I’ve ever met - to oversee the students’ learning about climate science, policy, technology, and business. The students I worked with gave me tremendous hope that my generation is capable of steering us away from a fate of complete climate catastrophe. I am also so grateful to Laurel Zaima-Sheehy for spearheading the academic content and Columbia’s leadership in the program, and for offering me the opportunity to moderate a panel with three fascinating and accomplished climate and sustainability finance experts - Denise Hearn, Paul DeNoon, and Eric Urbaniak, CNP. These experts reaffirmed my hope that financial instruments will inevitably shift the market away from oil and gas and towards renewable energy, and that my generation must be part of this critical transition.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????–??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? During a two-week summer program under the ???????????? ???????????????? ??????????????, held within the historic Yale University in New Haven, I was the instructor of the course: "Future of Finance – Cash to Crypto." Putney Student Travel put this program together, designed to attract bright young minds who already recognize the transformative potential of blockchain & Bitcoin, eager to deepen their understanding of this innovative technology. In our comprehensive crypto course (one of the modules offered), we explored the fundamentals of cryptocurrencies, various types of blockchains, and blockchain taxonomy (what's what in crypto). However, the most engaging aspect was our hands-on approach, as the students ??????????????????, ???????????? ????, ?????????????? a Bitcoin testnet mobile wallet, understanding how digital wallets operate and the importance of security in cryptocurrency transactions. We delved into the world of ?????????????? ????????????????????, particularly SHA-256, which is essential in Bitcoin mining. Each student used their first name to generate a SHA-256 hash, underscoring the critical role of hashing in blockchain technology. Using a ?????????????? ???????????????????? ????????????????, we examined real transactions, highlighting the transparency of public, open, and permissionless networks like the Bitcoin blockchain. The program was enriched by the visit of Peter Shumlin, the former governor of Vermont, who spoke about the pressing challenge of global warming. Additionally, industry experts such as Pamela Clegg, MBA CAMS, Theo Papageorge, and Melissa Wisner shared their insights, greatly enhancing the learning experience for our crypto-module students. I personally wish to thank them all for sharing their valuable expertise. Blockchain technology holds immense potential to revolutionize our interactions with digital systems. By learning about blockchain now, students position themselves at the forefront of technological advancement, ready to tackle future challenges and seize emerging opportunities. May thanks to all my new colleagues I worked with in this program: Nicholas Triolo, Russell Mayhew, Beatriz Ramírez Betances, Erica Ferraro, M.S., Daisy-Jane (Daisy) Buck, Hannah Gilkenson, Rianna C., @Princy Sebastian, Morgan Hogue, Miriam Yampuler, Naheem W., Hector Peralta, Ling Han and anyone I may have missed.

Here are some kind words from Erica Ferraro, M.S., our Sports Business, Media, and Law instructor at Oxford Academia at Yale University. Thank you for spending your summer with us, Erica!
Hey LinkedIn friends! I’ve been keeping a secret that I’d love to share ?? Over the last 2 weeks, I’ve had the distinct privilege of teaching a group of students in the Oxford Academia program at Yale University. During our session, we spent our time reviewing the foundations of sport business and discussing the power of sport as a medium for igniting change. The students centered their final projects on promoting and celebrating female representation in the media, while highlighting cultural diversity in sport as a whole. To see their ideas come to life in such a short amount of time was nothing short of inspiring. I wanted to give a special thank you to Ashley B. Marshall and Caroline Heffernan for sharing their wisdom with the group and shedding light on the power of building relationships. I also wanted to thank Rick Ridall for helping me develop a killer curriculum and for being a wonderful mentor over the past few years. As for me, I’ve learned a great deal about myself and about the industry, overall. It never ceases to amaze me how much you can learn from those you are supposed to be teaching. If you told me I’d be teaching a group of students at Yale University, I’d think you were crazy. However, as I reflect on the past two weeks, I’m excited to see what the future holds for my journey as a leader in the sport world.
