One of my favorite interviews of all time. I was doing my best to understand what Harlie Bassitt was most passionate about. “Would you prefer more of this type of work or that type of work?” I asked. After I tried enough times and in enough ways, she finally smiled and said, “If PHOS Creative sold dumpsters, I would still want to work here. That’s how much I love this company, its mission, and its culture.” Yesterday morning, we brought her back in to make her an offer. After we presented everything, I asked, “Where’s your head at on all of this? No pressure to decide right now, I just want to know how you’re feeling.” She didn’t hesitate. “Since the first time I came in, my husband and I have been praying about this. We were prepared to accept any offer PHOS made. If it’s okay, I’d love to just say yes right now.” Moments like this remind me why culture matters so much. I am not the leader I once was. The reason I started PHOS Creative is not the reason I continue to lead it. A shift has occurred. As I look back over the past 12 years of my own journey and study the stories of other entrepreneurs, I have found five major shifts that take place in the leadership and ownership of faithful executive leaders. New joy, purpose, vision, and freedom are found in these shifts, not just as changes in strategy but as transformations of the heart. They redefine success, reshape culture, and reorient our leadership toward something far greater than ourselves. They are hard, but they are so worth it.
