EdTech to empower the next generation of culturally grounded, community serving tech makers + problem solvers
关于我们
Purple Mai?a Foundation is a 501(c)(3) technology education nonprofit. We teach coding and computer science through after-school or elective classes to Native Hawaiian students, low-income youth, and others who are underrepresented in tech. As we increase access to tech education and increase students’ earning potential, we also ground students to tech education that their ancestors were indigenous innovators who used their skills and perspective to serve their communities and lands. We support Hawaiian values in contemporary tech culture, and we think that by learning to innovate as indigenous technologies, we can be part of a global shift toward growing more sustainable and just societies.

Check out this amazing content our haumāna are producing through the guidance of their kumu! Lets change that narrative ????

What’s better than seeing your ideas come to life? Seeing them in action by the people they were made for. That’s exactly what happened at Polipoli Farms, where our Purple Mai?a Foundation Digital Creators students got to witness their hard work being used in real life—on the ?āina, in the hands of community, making a difference. Here’s the thing: you’re 86% more likely to buy something when you see it used by someone who looks like you. That’s why this kind of content matters here in Hawai?i. When we showcase our people, our businesses, and our stories, we don’t just tell our history—we shape our future. To my haumāna, you are the designers of lāhui. Your mo?olelo matters. I urge you to continue showing up and taking space because you are changing the narrative for the better. To my Digital Creators team, Tre Zamora, Hunter Naho'oikaika, Pōhaikealoha P, and Jessica Manapul, you are the shaping the designers of lāhui. Mahalo for your energy, time, and skill that you pour into them, please don?t ever stop. Mahalo a nui to Polipoli Farms for your open arms and amazing hospitality, the ?ike shared, and the chance to connect innovation with community. The next generation of creators is here, and they’re just getting started?? https://lnkd.in/e4SBHw72

Still processing the incredible week we just had at the Digital Creators Hō?ike! It feels surreal, and honestly, I’m at a loss for words. When I joined the Purple Mai?a Foundation team back in February, I was invited to take on a role I had never officially done before: kumu (teacher). The title of kumu carries deep cultural weight and responsibility in Hawaiian culture, so stepping into this role was as exhilarating as it was daunting. But thanks to the not-so-gentle encouragement from my amazing team—Jessica Manapul, Pōhaikealoha P, Tre Zamora, and Hunter Naho'oikaika—I dove in headfirst as the Digital Creators Kumu and Puna Cohort Lead. Digital Creators is a free introductory course empowering Hawai?i residents with the foundational skills needed for a career in digital marketing and graphic design. Through this program, students explore storytelling, marketing, and design fundamentals, all while embracing a culturally grounded approach rooted in the context of Hawai?i. This past week marked the culmination of nearly a year’s worth of work—teaching curriculum I built and working closely with over 80 students, representing 20+ nonprofits and 30+ local businesses in 2024. Watching these haumāna (students) trust me to share the ?ike (knowledge) I’ve gained in marketing, social impact, social media, and PR has been the honor of my career. Seeing the growth in their confidence, the connections they’ve made, and the ideas sparked has been beyond rewarding. Every cohort brings something unique and lights up the space in ways I never could have anticipated. Even more inspiring are the unexpected outcomes: ?? Haumāna stepping confidently into spaces they never imagined themselves in. ?? Exploring creativity that has the potential to generate income. ?? Five students launching their own nonprofits and businesses—dreams they’ve had for years finally becoming reality. To think, I never imagined anyone would call me Kumu Makana. But now, I can’t wait to show up for class each week and share this journey with these incredible individuals. What about you? Have you ever stumbled into a role or opportunity that completely changed your career, your outlook, and your way of contributing to your community? Mahalo nui to everyone who’s been part of this amazing ride so far! Kayli Pack, Xeana Dung, County of Hawaii, Ashley Kierkiewicz, Ku?uhiapo Jeong, Lauae Kekahuna, and soooo many more!

It?s Mālama Studios Monday and time for us to share the incredible nonprofits that were a part of Mālama Design Studio, Cohort 2, as part of our mission to empower Native Hawaiian organizations ??? These orgs gained access to web, design, and social media support, allowing them to build strong, sustainable foundations beyond their current capacity. Mahalo to these inspiring nonprofits for their dedication to our community. Heading deeper into Puna on the island of Hawai?i, for our last stop of this huaka?i, to ??Kahuwai ???? Kahuwai in Puna is a treasure of ?ike and ?āina, preserving over 200 acres of native Hawaiian settlements. Mālama'd by @kalaweaumoku and his 'ohana with the support of Kamehameha Schools, this cultural site offers hands-on experiences where students connect with their kūpuna, practice traditional skills, and learn about pre-contact Hawaiian life. ?????? Much of this wahi pana has remained untouched since the early 1900s and because of Keone Kalawe and his incredible 'ohana it continues to be protected and cared for today. E mālama i ka ?āina a e mālama i ka mo?omeheu. ????
