When should I change secondary or final HVAC filters in a hospital....by pressure, a schedule or visual? This is literally a million dollar question in some facilities! Pressure is hands down the most accurate way. Any other way is likely either costing you in excessive energy or labor and filter costs. Filters have a initial pressure, a recommended pressure and a final pressure. Recommended pressure is a level set that once exceeded, energy costs begin a rapid climb. We have found that many facilities run close to final pressure and therefore are seeing exorbitant energy costs that far exceed the cost of new filters including labor. Also in this case, air changes per hour are reduced, creating indoor air quality issues. Other facilities are visually deciding on when filters need changed or going by a set schedule. Both of these methods can also have unrealized costs by changing filters before they need to be, or leaving them too long increasing energy usage. So with recommended pressure being the best point to change these filters, it is also good to have an unbiased filter audit to see what options are available to completely optimize the balance of filter costs, labor and energy consumption. We have seen well over $350,000 a year in combined savings by simply using a different filter and changing it at the correct point. Interesting point: NAFA (North American Filter Association) states that only 18.5% of total life costs associated with filters, is the cost of the filter....let that sink in!
