A central Purdue resource for students, mentors, and administrators to expand undergraduate research experiences.

关于我们

The Purdue Office of Undergraduate Research's (OUR) mission is to serve as a central resource to promote and expand experiential learning for undergraduate students through research experiences with skilled research mentors. The OUR works with everyone connected with undergraduate research, from prospective and actively engaged undergraduate researchers to research mentors (faculty, staff, graduate students, and post-docs), program administrators, and university administrators. The OUR coordinates efforts across campus, provides centralized support, and maintains an information portal to connect all stakeholders with undergraduate research experience (URE) activities. The OUR conducts formal and informal training, which helps students to develop skills that enhance their research experience, deepen their understanding of disciplinary material, and increase their value to graduate programs and future employers. The use of evidence-based best practices, such as learning contracts and mentoring strategies, maximizes the potential for positive experiences for both students and mentors.

This past Wednesday (11/20/24) I had the opportunity to present an educational talk on my research “Rethinking Civil Litigation: Why A Data Driven Approach Is Necessary” at the Purdue Office of Undergraduate Research Fall Research Expo. My research explores the underlying biases in our decision making and how certain biases and heuristics impact the efficiency of civil litigation. I then proposed how the civil litigation process can be optimized using statistical models designed towards finding the expected settlement value of a case. Thank you Prof. Beth Baumgartner and Mr. JJ Sadler for all of your help leading up to my presentation.

  • ?Anjali Gupta began her undergraduate research journey in September of her freshman year after receiving an email from the Purdue University College of Education about joining research projects. She expressed interest in a project focusing on school choice policy in Indianapolis and began working with her mentor, Dr. Bryan Duarte, assistant professor of educational leadership and policy studies. Anjali’s research examines the effects of the growing number of charter schools on public school enrollment, funding, and equity. By analyzing financial and enrollment data, she discovered significant disparities in the differences of Black and Latinx students and between students receiving free or reduced-price lunches attending public and choice schools. Her work highlights critical inequities in access to education and the need for further investigation into the socioeconomic impacts of school choice policies. During the 2023 Fall Expo, Anjali’s poster presentation earned her second place for the College of Education, an achievement she considers one of her proudest moments. Reflecting on the experience, she shared how presenting her research to faculty and students helped her grow as a researcher and solidified her passion for educational policy. She credits Dr. Duarte’s guidance in enhancing her presentation, organizational, and analytical skills throughout the process. As a chemistry education major, Anjali plans to start her career as a teacher with hopes to eventually transition into a role in educational policy or research. Her experiences analyzing school data to draw meaningful conclusions highlighted the challenges facing public schools and strengthened her advocacy for equitable education. To other students interested in research, Anjali offers encouragement: “It’s ok if this seems out of your comfort zone! Your fellow researchers and mentors are here to support and guide you through the process. Even if you’re unsure, give it a shot for a semester. Who knows – you might find a new passion to explore in your future career! It feels good to help create new knowledge that’ll make a difference in the world.”

  • Mikayla Klemp started conducting research in her sophomore year of college with the Purdue Archives & Special Collections department in the Purdue Libraries and School of Information Studies. Since then, Mikayla has conducted projects with the Purdue Archives and the TIPPECANOE COUNTY HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION with the Purdue University College of Liberal Arts. During the 2023 Fall Expo, Mikayla won first place for the College of Liberal Arts posters and shared it was “one of my proudest undergraduate achievements.” Her research with the Scheuring Icon Collection's Orthodox iconographic paintings in the Purdue Galleries centered around filling in description gaps and working with an icon specialist in Washington. She re-analyzed 126 icon artworks to determine what countries they originated from and the years of their creation for pieces missing this information. As a researcher, Mikayla shared she “highly recommends participating in an OUR research conference to any aspiring researcher! It was a great introduction to presenting original research in a professional setting.” Another project of Mikayla’s, about the changes to the Purdue curriculum to accommodate World War II efforts, is currently displayed as a mini exhibit in the Purdue Archives on the 4th floor of the Humanities, Social Science, and Education (HSSE) Library! It includes projects that developed recipes that didn’t require rationed food, created courses to train female engineers to replace the men in the workplace, and generated innovative airplane technology. When asked about how she felt seeing her work on display in the Purdue Archives, Mikayla noted, “Seeing my exhibition on display in the Archives has given me an incredible sense of accomplishment and pride. It took nearly two years' worth of research, writing, and designing for everything to come together, but I’m so happy with how it turned out. I’m glad I pushed myself to take it on. I have so many favorite parts of this exhibition, but I really enjoyed researching the slice-of-life parts about the students. Despite the Second World War raging on and very directly affecting their academic, social, and personal lives, they were still just young adults with a lot of the same hobbies and aspirations as Purdue students on campus today.” Mikayla is currently a student at Ball State University finishing up her Master’s degree in historic preservation. Her current research projects focus on stagecoach travel in Indiana in the mid- to late-19th century. Her work will culminate in developing interpretive materials for a stagecoach inn and tavern building built c. 1849 in Porter County, IN.
