? Exciting Research Update! ? I am thrilled to share my latest research, "Rotenone-induced acute miRNA alterations in extracellular vesicles produce mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death," published with Springer Nature in npj Parkinson’s Disease. Our study explores how extracellular vesicles (EVs) contribute to early Parkinson’s disease (PD) pathogenesis. We found that acute rotenone exposure alters specific serum miRNAs, particularly miR-30a-5p and miR-484, which drive oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuronal cell loss when transferred via EVs. These findings suggest that EV-derived miRNAs could serve as early diagnostic markers and play a key role in disease progression. Happy to have attended #SOT2025 and presented part of our work on Systems Biology Approaches in Toxicology! It was such an adorable time with Orlando's lovely weather, the assorted dishes I tried there, and the Arab company that cheered me everyday! It was a nice opportunity to connect with new brilliant minds in the field and share various insights! That wouldn't have been possible without the continous support of my PI and the travel grant awarded by Purdue ISF! ?? What an incredible week! I cannot begin to share my excitement about attending my first ever Society of Toxicology Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida! Over the course of a few days, I was able to learn from the brightest, talented, and passionate group of individuals from all corners of the globe on a wide assortment of topics including but not limited to space, medical, computational, environmental, hazard and risk assessment, and my field of neurotoxicology. I presented on our recent work imaging the “Spatial distribution of PFOS in the rat brain using DESI-MSI” which essentially shows us where in the brain PFOS deposits at different time points after just one exposure. Our preliminary data shows some interesting findings suggesting differences in brain region targets and even PFOS elimination patterns in males and females! In troubled times where science is being challenged and the future of environmental and public health is uncertain, I am ever grateful that I had the privilege to stand amongst the researchers in my field, learn from them, and be inspired by the scientific movement. This entire experience could not be possible without the tremendous village that supported my work. A sincere thank you to the Society of Toxicology (SOT) for bestowing upon me the Undergraduate Research Award allowing me to travel and attend the conference amongst a cohort of highly specialized undergraduates. And of course a huge thank you to Josephine M Brown-Leung, M.S., Dr.Jason Cannon, and all the members of Cannon Lab for the incredible mentorship that made this research possible.
