??Eva Hudson, a junior in the Purdue University School of Health Sciences, is one of the best college volleyball players in the country, but her goals are even higher. "I said, 'Your goals are higher than being a first-team All-American,'" Purdue volleyball coach Dave Shondell recalls in a conversation with Hudson. "Your goals are USA Volleyball, to play on the Olympic team." The Purdue University Center for Early Learning (CEL) is pushing the integration of early STEM and non-STEM education research with PURPOSE. The Purdue University Research Program on STEM Education (PURPOSE) postdoctoral training initiative assembled four postdoc researchers from across the United States for collaboration and mentorship opportunities. Funding for PURPOSE was obtained by David Purpura, director of the CEL and professor in the Purdue University Department of Human Development and Family Science, and his HDFS colleagues Sarah Eason, Cammie McBride, Rob Duncan, Jenn Finders and Valerie Knopik via a $1.25 million National Science Foundation (NSF) institutional training grant. #PurdueHHS #PurdueUniversity #STEM #education

?? Today is the #GreatAmericanSmokeout, a day that the American Cancer Society has hosted on the third Thursday of November for almost 50 years. The Great American Smokeout is an opportunity for people who smoke to commit to healthy, smoke-free lives. While combustible cigarettes have a proven risk of cancers and other diseases, less is known about the health effects of vaping and e-cigarette use. Two Purdue University School of Health Sciences researchers, Thivanka Muthumalage and Jonathan Shannahan, are investigating these vaping and e-cigarette technologies to explore the health effects in both the lungs and the mouth. Since 2019, Purdue University Department of Psychological Sciences graduate students have earned six major awards at the renowned Psychonomic Society’s annual meeting. The 2024 event is marked for Nov. 21-24 in New York City and is expected to draw about 2,700 psychology students, researchers and professionals.
