Forever chemicals are everywhere, but how are they impacting wildlife in nature? FNR's own Marisol Sepulveda, Ty Hoskins and Jason Hoverman are among those investigating PFAS. Here's a look at some of their work and others at Purdue: https://lnkd.in/gVD7-hDv #foreverchemicals #pfas #wildlife #research

On International Day of Forests, we celebrate the importance of all types of forests. As our friends at FAO said "From fruits, nuts & honey to edible insects & mushrooms, forests are nature's supermarkets, offering essential nutrients that sustain millions of people." In this episode of A Woodland Management Moment, Purdue Extension forester Lenny Farlee explores the unique characteristics of north-facing slopes. These shaded hillsides remain cooler and moister for much of the year, creating an ideal habitat for moisture-loving tree species such as Northern Red Oak, tulip tree, sugar maple and black maple. They also support a rich understory of shade-tolerant shrubs and diverse plant life. #forestry #northfacingslopes #oak #maple #tuliptree #forestmanagement #forestecosystems #understory #shrubs

Learn more about how AI is impacting forest ecology research as our own Jingjing Liang shares on the Modeling Talk Series - Tracking Migration and Biodiversity with Advanced Computing, March 11 at noon ET: https://lnkd.in/gRKAXEZ8. Streaming live on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/geuGxzWt Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the study of forest ecosystems, enabling researchers to analyze vast amounts of biodiversity and environmental data with unprecedented precision. This presentation explores how AI-driven methodologies, including machine learning and advanced computing, are transforming forest migration research. By leveraging global datasets and computational power, we uncover patterns of forest shifts, assess biodiversity changes, and predict future ecological trends. The integration of AI into forestry science not only enhances conservation efforts but also provides valuable insights for policymakers, industries, and communities reliant on forest ecosystems. This talk will highlight key findings from global research initiatives, such as the Forest Advanced Computing and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (FACAI) and Science-i, demonstrating AI’s critical role in understanding and managing the dynamic nature of our forests in the face of environmental change.

Did you know that you can measure a tree from your iPhone? The iForester app, created by Drs. Song Zhang, Cheryl Qian and Songlin Fei does just that: https://lnkd.in/geagRghd The next step is to train the app to measure merchantable and total tree height, which, in conjunction with diameter, will allow an estimation of volume. #forestry #forestmanagement #trees #treemeasurement
