Our JAAEA research article "Extreme weather events, food shopping behavior, and card spending" is now available online as an open-access publication. Great to have Jayson Lusk on this project! This is probably the first study to identify the impact of a hurricane event (Hurricane Ian) on state-level retail sales across all major food categories, while also providing complementary evidence on consumer card spending behavior at general retail, convenience, and grocery stores. Some of the findings: ◆ Relative to the baseline week (Sept. 12-18, 2022),?food grocery sales increased by $387 million (128%) in five days, i.e., from the first hurricane advisory until Hurricane Ian's landing. ◆ Stockpiling was the highest for commercially prepared products, beverages, and proteins such as meat/eggs/nuts in the five days before Hurricane Ian. ◆ In the second week after Hurricane Ian, there was a rebound in food sales. Commercially prepared products and meat/eggs/nuts had the highest rebound. ◆ Fruit and vegetable sales declined during the hurricane week and the sales rebound remained weak. ◆ Florida consumers’ relative debit-card spending on groceries was the highest at general retail stores five days before Hurricane Ian. However, consumers continued to spend in convenience stores and grocery stores until the day before Hurricane Ian’s landfall.? ◆ Florida counties that became eligible for Disaster-SNAP aid were associated with a 9.5 percentage points increase in daily card spending relative to other Florida counties, suggesting affected communities increased spending for recovery. A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to give a keynote for the Purdue DIAL Ventures Future of Agrifood Innovation Workshop. Housed in Purdue University Agricultural Economics, this group is home to the most innovative approach I've seen in the way they leverage on-campus expertise with stakeholder needs. Here's the punchline to my talk: Innovative business models are fundamental requirements for sustainable and regenerative agrifood tech solutions. A few more takeaways: - Finding the balance between sustainability and profitability is a big challenge. Producers often focus on economic sustainability, while consumers are more concerned with things like soil health and biodiversity. Bridging this gap is key to moving forward. - I emphasized the need for market-based solutions—innovative business models that make sustainability practical and achievable for everyone involved. - Another point we discussed was the importance of collaboration and communication. A shared understanding of terms like "sustainable" and "regenerative" is critical for progress, and public-private partnerships can make a huge difference. - And of course, technology and data will play a huge role in shaping the future. Tools like AI, blockchain, and IoT have the potential to revolutionize how we produce and trade food. “It’s bringing together the technical expertise on food manufacturing and food safety from food science, and the marketing, entrepreneurship and business management strengths of ag econ,” said Kenneth Foster, the institute’s assistant director and professor of agricultural economics. "...Whatever the value-added product, the new institute can help train rural entrepreneurs in developing a recipe, making their product, educating them about the safety factors they need to control, and assessing their potential market."
