GEARE did an excellent job of highlighting our Spanish Professor, Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas! He is a much valued instructor and colleague.
As a very prominent face of the Purdue GEARE program, Professor Gabriel O. Rios-Rojas is very active and beloved within the program. Originally from Colombia, Professor Rojas received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering at the Pontificia Bolivariana University in Medellin, Colombia, and Master’s degree in Telecommunications at the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO. He then went on to do almost 30 years in industry and visit over 25 countries where he was able to meet with and learn about people and their experiences worldwide. He is now a professor at Purdue where he teaches Spanish. Professor Rojas strongly emphasizes teaching about the cultural differences between groups of people on a local, national, and international scope. Seeing a need for collaboration between engineering and language, he developed a Spanish class specifically for engineering and technology. He works closely with the Office of Professional Practices and the School of Engineering Education to ensure that his students receive the best and most relevant education possible. Professor Rojas’ favorite moments from the GEARE program are talking to returning students and listening to their stories and experiences. He loves to see the joy and excitement on their faces along with their sense of accomplishment and cultural knowledge. Another one of his loves is cycling. When the winters make this passion difficult, he enjoys spending time with his wife watching movies. Thank you Professor Gabriel Rios Rojas for everything that you do!
