January is Human Trafficking Awareness Month Nurses can play a critical role in identifying and combating human trafficking. Dr. Morgan Dutler, a dedicated faculty member in the Purdue Global School of Nursing, explores this important topic in the first article of a two-part series. https://lnkd.in/gMU7GPUE --- The Role of the RN in Stopping Trafficking The first is to learn more about human trafficking to help others. Polaris (formerly Polaris Project) (www.polarisproject.org, A21 (https://www.a21.org) , Office of Victims of Crime (https://ovc.ojp.gov/), and many other organizations have training, whether in person or online, where one can learn more about the topic. It is important to not confront the victim or the trafficker. Instead, call the police or security in the facility where the victim is identified. Tell them how the victim is presenting. Memorize the Human Trafficking Hotline number: 1-888-373-7888. Let the victim know you are them for them, and talk to the survivor, not at them. Become involved in the local community to bring about awareness. Big news in the nursing world! Abbie Stockard, a 22-year-old nursing student from Alabama, has been crowned Miss America! Abbie used her platform to highlight an important issue: the decline in young people joining the workforce post-pandemic. She urged action, saying: "I believe we need to encourage [young people] to join the workforce, adapt to new skills, and learn to grow in the industries we have today." Her win not only celebrates her talent and leadership but also shines a light on the resilience and drive of nursing students everywhere.
