How 4 tech freshers developed a multi-million dollar fintech platform

11th November 2022, a casual work day as usual, suddenly turned into an all-hands on deck when one of our gaming milestones witnessed a sudden spike in users.?

Prabhat Kumar quickly got into action with a refactor to our caching middleware to optimise the number of workload queries. Suraj G. wrote a live verification module to compare submitted scores with realtime score sequences. Dhruv garg wrote a global recon script to safely validate and backfill data for older users while Arab Kumar preemptively worked on a patch fix with multiple client-side improvements that got scheduled that night.?

Just a few years ago, these individuals were busy writing midterms and making sure their practicals were up to the mark. Today they’re building a platform which serves 1000s of financial transactions serving over 500,000 users.

Fello was born during the midst of the pandemic. This meant that we had to go through phases of hiring slowdowns and the great resignation, making it a job seekers market. This situation made building a team seemingly a lot more difficult, especially for an early stage startup. Good engineers were hard to find and difficult to persuade solely on the basis of a vision and the prospect of a great future.

This is when we decided to go a different route. Each one of our hires was either straight out of college or had less than a few years of experience. The other common denominator, however, was their passion to build great products and a zeal to become better everyday. They were motivated to become extremely strong in their functions and used the platform provided to them as the means to do it.

Merging the world of games and finance comes with its set of challenges. On the finance side of things, we constantly deal with exercises in security, robustness, and fault tolerance. On the gaming side of things, we deal with concurrency, scale and complexity in logic. For the end customer, Fello is a rich experience where you invest in assets and play rewarding games. For us, there are levels of rendering frameworks, microservices, libraries and automations that are allowing these ecosystems to run together as a decoupled yet integrated product.?

At Fello, user centricity is at the core focus of every engineering piece.?

  • Entire team is actively exposed to customer requests, issues, and key product metrics.
  • Each engineer is a functional owner. They act as leaders of their function, taking care of new improvements, optimisations and issues.?
  • Every microservice is externalizable and can act as its own small application.?
  • We dont believe in backlogs. Sprints are formulated based on current user problems and new feature stacks.?

This culture of product based engineering is what pushed the team to become strong technologists and allowed us to build a very innovative financial experience for the end users without ever having a dedicated product team.

Now, as we embark upon 2023 with a fresh round of infused capital, we plan to turn over to our next chapter of growth: gearing up for more scale, adding new features and products to our suite, taking up more complicated challenges, and attempting micro-innovations on a regular basis. With that said, we invite all senior developers out there to apply with us and join us on our journey towards promoting healthy finance in India.
