关于我们

The Pulitzer Center champions the power of stories to make complex issues relevant and inspire action. We have a bold vision: to be the venue for the world’s most innovative and consequential reporting, with journalism as the key element for mobilizing society through audience engagement strategies. Founded in 2006, the Center is an essential source of support for enterprise reporting in the United States and across the globe. The thousands of journalists and educators who are part of our networks span more than 80 countries. Our work reaches tens of millions of people each year through our news-media partners and an audience-centered strategy of global and regional engagement. We believe that people and communities who actively engage with systemic challenges will find solutions together. By supporting journalists as they conduct in-depth investigations, produce compelling stories, and engage diverse audiences, we create a ripple effect of world-changing impact. The result? Policy reforms, public awareness, and community empowerment.

Banks and public money are financing the collapse of the Brazilian Amazon. From January 2018 to August 2024, public banks lent nearly $1.9 billion to the landowners of 24,000 rural properties in the region known as Amacro, an agricultural frontier opened under Bolsonaro. Some of this money ended up in the hands of people involved in deforestation, as well as those suspected of funding the attempted coup in the capital, Brasilia, in 2023. Since March 2024, Pulitzer Center Rainforest Investigations Network Fellow Catarina Barbosa, for Jornal Sumaúma has been conducting a deep investigation in the region of the Brazilian Amazon known as Amacro. There, she discovered a cycle of depredation in which political and economic forces are using public money to accelerate the death of the planet’s largest tropical rainforest. Barbosa's groundbreaking investigation analyzes political agendas, government and academic documents, deforestation figures, and data on Central Bank financing and fines levied for environmental violations. The reporting team traveled more than 2,000 kilometers by road, following the money flows stemming from rural credit in the form of low-interest loans, which are one of the driving forces behind the obliteration of a rainforest that is essential for climate stability. With access to data on 65,315 loans, the team cross-referenced information to sketch a profile of the beneficiaries, the financial institutions, and, above all, the destination of the money now underwriting interests that are killing the Amazon. In times when AI systems are being used worldwide with little to no regulation, journalistic scrutiny is more important than ever. But what does successful AI accountability reporting look like and what does it take to achieve it? I'll be hosting a roundtable on this topic tomorrow at the European Press Prize conference at Publix Berlin. It will be filled with insights from my current Investigate Europe reporting project, which we're able to realise thanks to the support of the Pulitzer Center. If you're in town or around, come by. I'd be happy to see you! You can still register for the conference including many more interesting sessions by great colleagues here: https://lnkd.in/ef3cgdS7
