Hi?? Benin Launches Landmark Agricultural Insuranc:?insuring 100,000 smallholder farmers by the end of 2025 ?????? Exciting news from Benin! Pula, in partnership with the Government of Benin, FNDA, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, LuxDev, and NSIA INSURANCE LIMITED, has officially launched a groundbreaking agricultural insurance initiative aimed at insuring 100,000 smallholder farmers by the end of 2025. The government of Benin also invested in the Crop Insurance with the support from the technical and financial partners. This milestone marks a critical step in protecting farmers from climate risks while unlocking access to finance and boosting productivity. With agriculture employing over 70% of Benin’s population and contributing 30% of GDP, climate shocks—such as droughts and floods—have long posed a threat to food security and farmer livelihoods. To address these risks, this new initiative subsidizes 80% of insurance premiums, ensuring financial protection for rice, cotton, and livestock farmers. ?? Why this matters:? ? First payouts already underway – 11,000 rice farmers received insurance coverage in 2024, demonstrating the program's real impact ? Financial security for farmers – With climate insurance, farmers can access credit, invest in modern practices, and grow their businesses ? Through AGRA grant and collaboration, we are developing climate resilience solutions for smallholder farmers, leveraging satellite data, historical insights, and farm-level inputs to provide bundled insurance solutions. The goal? To unlock access to finance, enhance farming productivity, create jobs for smallholder farmers in Sikasso and Koulikoro regions in Mali Pula catalyzed the initial AGRA partnership of $256,000 to unlock additional insurance premiums of $425,663 from BlueOrchard Finance Ltd and insure 115,000 smallholder farmers. We celebrate the announcement made last week at the World Economic Forum that Bayer Foundation and PULA plan to insure 10 million smallholder farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The donation from our Crop Science division to this effort is a step forward in protecting the livelihoods of farmers, and the food they produce, against the risks brought on by climate change. Small farms in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) not only contribute to food security – they ensure it. I shared a lot about my visit to Kenya last year, because seeing the resilience of these small farmers was a key experience to me. During our conversations, it became clear that access to climate change adaptation tools, to agricultural inputs, and to adequate credit and insurance services is one of the biggest challenges. Globally, less than 20% of smallholder farmers have insurance to protect themselves against the impact of extreme weather events. ? Our focus at Bayer | Crop Science is on delivering innovative, farmer-focused solutions that scale regenerative agriculture across all regions. However, we need partners across the food-value chain to ensure farmers in rural areas have access, too. ? I'm proud to share our support of a collaboration between the Bayer Foundation and the PULA Foundation in providing insurance coverage for 10 million smallholder farmers in LMIC. This is a big step towards more climate resilience within the smallholder farming community, while ensuring food security for the region.?More information can be found via the link in the comments.
