NOTE FOR MARKETERS: We’re all book publishing professionals and have lots of content to share, but this is not the place to promote your services or next book. This is the place to ask your peers’ advice and share your experiences and resources. Content that is auto-posted, does not contain a relevant question, is solicitation, SPAM or a sales pitch, and will be deleted immediately. 2) Be curious with your fellow group members. This means respecting opinions (cordial disagreement is fine), refraining from rude or violent language, and not soliciting group members. Violation of this rule will result in automatic removal from the group. 3) Please do not be “spammy" with posts. This means posting the same post multiple times or posting articles without commentary. Please be sure to point out something interesting from the article when you post. Thank you for joining the Publishers Weekly group.

I do so many interviews for Publishers Weekly that they can sometimes run together -- my fault, not theirs -- so when I talk to someone with next-level literary intelligence, it leaves an impression. To wit: ?? Ocean Vuong, 2019 MacArthur fellow and NYU creative writing professor, challenges traditional immigrant narratives in his second novel "The Emperor of Gladness" (Penguin Press, May). Reality check: The novel explores a unique intersection between a suicidal young Vietnamese man and a Lithuanian widow with midstage frontal lobe dementia in East Gladness, Connecticut. Drawing from his personal experience in food service and elder care, Vuong crafts a narrative about human connection and survival. By the numbers: ? Novel focuses on two immigrants at different life stages ? Author credits independent bookstores as first to recognize him as a writer ? Story set in East Gladness, CT (a stand-in for Hartford) What's next: The book examines how lives gain meaning through service and unexpected bonds, even as memory fades. The author challenges conventional immigrant storytelling, noting: "Labor and loneliness are the bedrock of American life." What does it mean when the best-case scenario is working the same job for 30 years? #LiteraryFiction #ImmigrantStories #AmericanLiterature #AsianAmericanWriters #IndieBookstores
