A smooth presidential transition is fundamental to the safety of our country and democracy. The president-elect has stalled the process by not signing the legally required ethics agreement vowing to avoid conflicts of interest during his term. It is critical that an incoming administration is looking out for the public good and not private interests.? ? I spoke with Major Garrett on CBS News about the transition, the need to reform the Senate confirmation process and how recess appointments are not the answer. In the face of challenges, public servants like Pete Guria, Steve Calanog and Tara Fitzgerald deliver solutions. Guria, Calanog and Fitzgerald of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) received the #Sammies2024 Safety, Security and International Affairs Medal for their disaster response work on the 2023 Maui Wildfires Emergency Response Team. They helped remove hazardous materials left by the wildfires that destroyed thousands of structures, while committing to respecting the culture of the Hawaiian people. Shine a light on a public servant who is making a difference by nominating them for the 2025 Samuel J. Heyman Service to America Medals!

President-elect Trump’s demand that the Senate go into recess would be a complete abdication of the chamber’s constitutional advice and consent responsibility. If the Senate goes to recess, the president-elect's political appointees would be able to take office, avoiding the confirmation voting process and increasing the odds of unvetted and unqualified individuals occupying critical government jobs. Although the Senate has an obligation to independently evaluate and vote on political appointees, Trump has a valid concern about getting his nominations confirmed in a timely manner. ? ? The confirmation system is broken, taking far too long in the review and voting process. With delays in confirmations and prolonged vacancies in key roles, bypassing the process would not serve the country’s best interests. The Senate must take action to fix the process by: ? ? 1. Reducing the number of positions subject to confirmation, so the president can focus on the most critical roles.? 2. Instituting procedural reforms to make the process more manageable and streamline nominee paperwork.? 3. Reforming the rule on returned nominations to avoid unnecessary delays. ? ? Fixing the current system will best serve the public interest—running roughshod over it will not. Read my recommendations to fixing the Senate confirmation process in The Hill here:?https://lnkd.in/ecFkqn-V ?

The president-elect's agenda to improve government efficiency revolves around purging experts and career civil servants. “President-elect Trump is pursuing the return of the?spoils system, which upends 130 years of bipartisan agreement that our government exists for the benefit of the people rather than the victor of an election,” said CEO Max Stier for The Washington Post. ? ? It would mark a return to a system where political loyalty could replace merit-based, nonpartisan civil servants, undermining the expertise that is critical to effectively serving the American public.? ??
