Honoring International Women's Day with Public Invention This International Women's Day, we're shining a light on the incredible women at Public Invention who are making a meaningful impact in humanitarian R&D engineering. From project management to team collaboration, these women utilize their skills and knowledge to commit their time while gaining opportunities to build solutions. Our community thrives with the presence of researchers, clinicians, philanthropists, biomedical engineers, and many more from all corners of the globe. Together, we have collaborated on impactful projects like GOSQAS, where college graduates, undergraduate volunteers, and Invention Coaches unite to develop open source hardware and R&D initiatives. Their efforts in projects such as portable incubators, open source emergency ventilators, and medical devices are truly pioneering. As women engineers and researchers step into the mainstream limelight, traditionally male-dominated fields are witnessing a monumental shift toward gender inclusivity and representation. From developing GUIs with programming languages to designing front-end codebases, these trailblazers are fostering inclusive spaces for women to excel in STEM. Innovations like Fetal health risk, the ecopot, Botanical sensor, Krake, Moonrat, GPAD, GLIA, Ferrofluid, and Ventmon are revolutionizing the open-source hardware experience, driving biomedical inventions, and presenting unparalleled opportunities to promote public infrastructure and free open-source hardware spaces for women. By leading the PIHE Movement and using engineering to help others, these women are true #SparkofInspiration. Exciting collaboration underway! Public Invention's NASA-MCOG project team is playing a key role in building part of a life-saving device and bridging the connection between space applications and healthcare improvements in developing regions. Unfortunately, a lack of access to reliable oxygen supply is a critical issue seen in hospitals and operating rooms in developing countries. An organization, called Kids Operating Room (KidsOR), seeks to combat this problem. KidsOR has partnered with NASA and Public Invention to test this revolutionary oxygen concentrator in a new application. Initially, this collaboration with NASA sought to improve oxygen delivery in space exploration, but has now evolved its impact on innovation pertaining to oxygen delivery through medical applications in underserved and underfunded communities. More specifically, we have brought together experts from NASA and leaders from KidsOR to synergistically test this oxygen source in other environments on Earth. This groundbreaking technology, developed in conjunction with #NASA and American Oxygen, will be tested for 9 months in pediatric surgery settings/hospitals in Zambia and Scotland in 2025. **The Goal: bringing cutting-edge solutions from space to vulnerable communities and transforming healthcare in the world’s most underserved regions. ????
