As of November 2024, NOAA had confirmed 24 weather/climate disaster events (https://lnkd.in/gkqsaJnz), costing the U.S. over $61 billion. At a recent Demo Day, Jessica Margolin - MBA, MS, FSA walked through data-driven strategies to address these challenges. https://lnkd.in/gVDFaqSr

Thank you to Robin and Rick for their support of public interest technologists! Join them in making a gift for the community: https://lnkd.in/d4cpnZmY
The news about the illegal terminations happening across the federal government had me feeling both angry and powerless. Thanks to Ryan Ko, I learned about the work Technologists for the Public Good is doing to support those impacted. My wife Robin and I just gave $1,000 towards TPG's board challenge, helping them raise a total of $15,000 to sponsor 100 memberships to recently terminated federal employees. (A link to donate is in the comments to this post) As some of you know, I was privileged to do a tour in public service a few years ago; many of the people I worked with sacrificed higher pay, better benefits, and career stability because they believe in serving their community. They deserve better than this, and your help will ensure they land on their feet. If you have the means, I'd love you to join Robin and me in supporting TPG's campaign. Any amount you give can help TPG, and by extension, help those affected by DOGE's recent (and presumably upcoming) actions. Thanks. #civictech

With the news this week of so many technologists and other federal civil servants being let go from their jobs, it feels like we continue to be left with more questions than answers. A few weeks ago we published a rapid explainer for some basic questions we heard folks asking, but we wanted to provide more for people in this moment. Thanks to the assistance of some wonderful volunteers, TPG is publishing another set of Q&As for folks affected by the current administration’s actions against civil servants. We cover the following topics: – Administrative Furloughs – Administrative Leave – Vendors and Contractors – Excepted Service employees – Probationary employees – Pathways Program employees – Government fellowships – Benefits-related Questions – Interacting with the Press – Rules for Former Government Employees Find our explainers here: https://lnkd.in/e9KeR6jy If you're interest in supporting our work and this community, consider donating to help us give 100 free memberships to public interest technologists affected by federal dismissals: https://lnkd.in/d4cpnZmY

The federal government's constant cycle of funding freezes, work pauses, layoffs, and reinstatements represents more than just ineffective governance - it reveals a profound failure to recognize the human cost of political brinkmanship. Each time we lurch from one crisis to the next, thousands of dedicated public servants face gut-wrenching uncertainty. These aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet - they're families unable to plan for their future, workers forced to question their career choices, and communities watching their economic stability erode. Our civil servants deserve better than being used as bargaining chips. They're the people who keep our national parks open, ensure our food is safe, advance critical research, and provide countless essential services that Americans rely on every day. When we treat government operations like a light switch to be flicked on and off, we don't just damage institutional effectiveness - we shatter the trust and security of the people who have dedicated their careers to serving the public good. It's time to recognize that stable, predictable governance isn't just good policy - it's a moral imperative that directly impacts real lives. #PublicService #Government #Leadership #WorkforceDevelopment #PublicPolicy
