??UPDATE: Judge grants NCN's motion for a preliminary injunction to prevent unilateral federal funding freeze, a big win for nonprofits and the people and communities they serve?? In our case National Council of Nonprofits et al v Office of Management and Budget, represented in court by Democracy Forward, Judge AliKhan ruled today to grant our request for a preliminary injunction. The ruling states that OMB is prohibited from implementing, giving effect to, or reinstating under a different name the unilateral freeze of all new federal spending, attempted under OMB's funding freeze directive. OMB must instruct all federal agencies of the preliminary injunction. Thank you all for your support - please keep up the great and vital work of nonprofits in communities throughout the country. Much more still to come. Onward!

Not a surprise. Some of the best environmental attorneys in California are at Shute, Mihaly & Weinberger LLP. They've been fighting the good fight for more than 40 years!
SMW once again has been named a Best Law Firm by Best Lawyers, a peer-reviewed guide to lawyers and law firms in the U.S. The firm was previously named to this list in 2024, 2022, and 2020. Eight SMW attorneys were also named to the Best Lawyers in America 2025 list. https://lnkd.in/gSzh5PDJ

When I started working on political campaigns in 2000, it was at a small firm in San Francisco called Staton & Hughes. There was a lot to do and a lot to remember, so I came up with my own quirky way to track the essential elements of a campaign, and it has stood the test of time. I call it the "6 P's of Campaigns", and here's what that stands for: 1.) PEOPLE = Do you have the right people, including consultants, staff, volunteers, advisors, endorsers and donors in place? 2.) PURSE = Is there enough money to fund your plan to reach your goal? 3.) POLLING = Do you know the best messages to compel your main audiences? 4.) PLATFORM = What is your policy position on the issues? 5.) PROMOTION = How are you going to get the word out, including earned and social media; materials like website, ads, mailers, and signage (including overall look and feel and logo); and events like speaking opportunities and team door-knocking? 6.) PLAN = What is the day-by-day, and sometimes minute-by-minute, timeline that marries all these categories into a cohesive campaign? Campaigns are overwhelming and require a ton of time, and they are more fun to win than to lose, especially after all that hard work! I learned from Mary Hughes and Cliff Staton years ago that the best campaigns are strong in all the areas outlined above, and I've remembered it to this day. Shout out to the team we all worked with including Cisco DeVries, Rocky Fernandez, Christine Stavem, Nina Erlich-Williams, Kevin Garrison-Easton, and David Gonzalez. Hope you are all well! #campaigns #PR #strategiccommunications #polling

Natura 2000 - Friday Finding: Environmental Rights Shaping Human Rights Enforcement ?? The evolving connection between human rights and environmental protection has led to a shift in legal interpretations. Courts like the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) now consider how environmental degradation can interfere with rights such as the right to life and family. This development underscores the growing recognition that safeguarding the environment is essential to ensuring human dignity and justice. ?? How can integrating environmental considerations into human rights law drive stronger global action against environmental harm? #HumanRights #EnvironmentalLaw #RightToLife #JusticeForNature #EUEnvironment #Sustainability #ClimateAction #LegalInnovation #GreenLaw #EnvironmentalProtection #HumanDignity #GlobalJustice

In speaking with many of our clients since Trump was sworn back into office last week, I've noticed that we're all trying to find our way in this new reality. Here are some thoughts I've had about how we can persevere through and beyond the next four years.
The question we're hearing more than any other this week is a simple one. How can we possibly push back against this firehose of half-truths, deliberate misinformation, and messaging intended to divide Americans from one another on a basic human level?

My esteemed colleague and business partner, Nina Erlich-Williams, authored this excellent piece about how we push back against Trumpism. The bottom line: we relentlessly tell the truth. #nonprofit #Trumpism #truth
