In honor of this quarter's theme of resilience, Public Works Partners Analyst Ilan Ackelsberg?did a deep dive on Restorative Justice (RJ) to explore opportunities for resilience in the criminal justice system. RJ is an approach to justice that focuses on repair instead of punishment. Since the murder of George Floyd over four years ago, RJ has become an increasingly popular tool to address past harms inflicted by the traditional justice system. But recent criticism of the movement from both sides of the aisle has called its future into question. How can we overcome these obstacles and build a more “just” version of restorative justice? Public Works Partner is closed today in observance of Veterans Day. On this day we honor and extend our deepest gratitude to all of the brave Americans who have risked their lives to keep us safe.

I spent part of this Election Day touring Hart Island, NYC’s public cemetery, or “potter’s field.” Hundreds of thousands have been buried here since 1858, including Union soldiers, victims of AIDS whose families would not claim their bodies, and COVID-19 victims. Burials tripled in 2020. An object lesson in why we need city services and to care for each other. NYC is far from perfect but we are working to improve. And some of these wonderful people are part of that - Mark Foggin Scott Zucker Mark S.
