"PRRI data does not paint a portrait of American young men suddenly becoming more pious in recent years. On most indicators, Gen Z men’s religious behavior has largely stayed the same in the past decade or so. Instead, it is American Gen Z women who have moved religiously." "We've often asked in the past, why are people disaffiliating from religion? And we find that more Americans than ever cite the treatment of LGBTQ individuals by their religious faith traditions as a reason they do so." ?? NEW: A national survey released today by PRRI tracks Americans’ views on LGBTQ rights across all 50 states and the District of Columbia and provides a profile of LGBTQ Americans, based on interviews with more than 22,000 adults throughout 2024. According to the 2024 PRRI American Values Atlas, most Americans continue to support LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections (75%), favor same-sex marriage (67%), and oppose allowing religiously based service refusals (58%). When asked about laws that would prevent parents from allowing their child to receive medical care for a gender transition, Americans are evenly split (49% oppose vs. 47% in favor) and fewer than four in ten Americans oppose laws that require driver’s licenses to display sex at birth rather than gender identity (37%). ? In addition to partisan divisions on LGBTQ rights, PRRI analysis shows that Americans’ views on these policies are also starkly divided depending on their state of residence and religious affiliation. Additionally, Americans who qualify as Christian nationalism Rejecters are notably more likely to support LGBTQ rights than Skeptics, Sympathizers, or Adherents. Read more: https://lnkd.in/eSCtuTbK

President & Founder at PRRI; Author, The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy and the Path to a Shared American Future; White Too Long; The End of White Christian America. Writing at robertpjones.substack.com.
A reality check on the reach of white Christian nationalism. White Christian nationalism is neither the best of us, nor the majority of us. My latest, reflections on the new PRRI (Public Religion Research Institute) survey of support for Christian nationalism in all 50 states. https://lnkd.in/evPTBgbb

President Donald Trump's order, "Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States" aimed at defunding sanctuary cities in the name of public safety contrasts with evidence linking sanctuary policies to lower crime, write PRRI Public Fellows?Lloyd Barba, Ph.D. and Sergio M. González, Ph.D in ArcMag. While cities like Boston are reaffirming their commitments, others like New York are reconsidering amid shifting public opinion. Read more here??? https://lnkd.in/egz-B2DQ

?? A new, nonpartisan national survey released by PRRI examines support for Christian nationalism across all 50 states. Based on interviews with more than 22,000 adults as part of the PRRI American Values Atlas, the new study examines the connections between support for Christian nationalism and voting for Trump, support for political violence, church attendance, partisanship, media habits, and more. Key findings include: - Overall, three in ten Americans qualified as Christian nationalism Adherents (10%) or Sympathizers (20%), compared with two-thirds of Americans who qualify as Skeptics (37%) or Rejecters (29%). - A majority of Republicans qualify as either Christian nationalism Adherents (20%) or Sympathizers (33%), compared to less than one-quarter of independents (6% Adherents and 16% Sympathizers) and less than one-fifth of Democrats (5% Adherents and 11% Sympathizers). - Support for Christian nationalism is positively correlated with higher church attendance. A majority of those who attend religious services weekly or more qualify as Christian nationalism Adherents or Sympathizers (51%), compared with 39% of those who attend at least a few times a year and 18% of those who seldom or never attend services.
