Public Health is at the mercy of our new president ???? As we all saw President Donald J. Trump accept his term for a second time (and hopefully last), we all took a collective gasp and clutched our chests as we know his presidency will once again push us to the brink and will quickly devalue prevention, access to care, human rights, social justice, and tack on all the -isms you can think of. I mean joking about Robert F Kennedy as overseeing NIH, CDC, USDA is not funny.??Our health does not belong in the hands of politicians but instead scientists and doctors who are trained to understand the complexities and intricacies of social determinants of health, our built environment, toxins in the environment, vulnerable populations, and how an ounce of prevention will always be worth a pound of cure!!!! ?? So what can we do as public health professionals who defend the front lines of health before anyone even goes to a doctor? ??Stay active in your community. ??Stay alert and abreast of policy changes. ??Fight misinformation and keep up with AI. ??Show up for vulnerable groups like women, children, elders, veterans and immigrants. ??Practice active listening when hearing opposing thoughts or combative people. ??Work in government to contribute. ??Become a local elected official. We can still protect our communities if we do our job as public health professionals. Focus on what you can control. Focus on being proactive for your community. Focus on taking care of yourself! I don’t know about you - but regardless of who’s our president - I will always stand on the side of Public Health. He ain’t the first President to attack our health systems and protective policies and sadly he won’t be the last! We will not stop me from fighting for health, equality, and prosperity for all! ???????? #publichealth #usa

For Hispanic Heritage Month, I wanted to give credit to my Mexican parents for raising a fearless independent Latina who shined a bright light on me from the day I was born and showed me the way to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. They taught all my siblings and I to stretch our wings and soar! Reminding us that we don't have to have all the answers, but along the way, we will sense what's right for us.
