In this article, Heather Rosen, PhD, director of the eating disorders program at Psychology Partners Group, explores the complex impact of GLP-1 medications on eating disorders. GLP-1 medications, used for Type 2 diabetes and weight loss, impact areas of the body including the brain. They can reduce hunger and increase fullness, leading to significant weight loss in many. However, limited research exists on their impact on individuals with eating disorders. While some studies suggest a decrease in binge eating episodes for those with binge eating disorder (BED) or bulimia nervosa (BN), GLP-1s can interfere with recovery by disrupting hunger signals and meal structure, potentially worsening symptoms and increasing risks, especially for restrictive eating disorders. Dr. Rosen emphasizes that more research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects.
