Google is acquiring HTC VIVE engineering talent and licensing its intellectual property in a deal worth $250MM to accelerate the development of #AndroidXR. Whoa. They're not playing around. Google has one of the largest software development teams on the planet. Hardware development and manufacturing are expensive. This gives HTC some valuable resources to compete in the hardware market with companies like Meta and Samsung Electronics. There is no word yet on how many employees there are or if it's just software or hardware resources. However, the non-exclusive license agreement allows HTC to continue developing IP. What does it mean for the VR industry? We now have three players in the market. Meta talks about being "open" but only compared to Apple's legendary closed ecosystem. Android is a truly open platform, and integrating VIVE's decade-plus tech and know-how will massively accelerate its go-to-market. Apple is still just getting out the gate. They've shown the market how to build VR UX, but it looks like they're gonna be playing catch up for years. Google is the dark horse in the race, but this acquisition gives them a big boost. There can only be two leaders in a market. If Meta wants to be more than a gaming company, they need to change their mindset around the #XR market and get serious about enterprise, LBE, and other verticals. What do you think?
