Sexuality and intimacy are deeply neurochemical and psychological experiences. Jeff Lundgren outlined key neurotransmitters involved in both sexual function and psychedelic states, including: Serotonin – Regulates mood, but paradoxically drops during peak sexual experiences to allow dopamine-driven pleasure. Dopamine – Drives reward and desire, reinforcing intimacy and connection. Oxytocin – Known as the “bonding hormone,” oxytocin fosters emotional closeness and trust (especially heightened by MDMA). Glutamate & Norepinephrine – Fuel arousal, motivation, and cognitive engagement, contributing to sexual drive and function. “Psychedelics and sexual experiences share neurochemical parallels, making them uniquely suited for addressing sexual dysfunction and intimacy challenges,” Lundgren explained. Bridging the Gap: Somatic Therapy and Informed Consent A core takeaway from Autumn’s presentation was that informed consent must be embodied, meaning a client feels?their “yes” in their body rather than being pressured into it cognitively. She emphasized that nervous system regulation is a prerequisite for true consent, stating: “If a client is in crisis or survival mode, they’re not making empowered decisions—they’re making desperate ones.” To help clients cultivate embodied consent, therapists should: Slow down the intake process?– Ensure clients have the space to reflect before committing to treatments. Incorporate body awareness practices?– Techniques such as breathwork, yoga therapy, and somatic experiencing?can help clients reconnect with their intuitive yes/no responses. Provide alternative treatment options?– Clients should always?be informed of non-psychedelic alternatives to ensure their decision is fully autonomous. Psychedelics have the potential to transform mental health care, particularly in addiction recovery. However, practitioners must balance enthusiasm with caution, ensuring clients are screened appropriately and guided through safe, intentional use. “Know what you know and know what you don’t know” was the repeated theme of Dr. Hanson’s presentation. This iconic line from Autumn Kunz Salinasinas inspired our request that she facilitate the experience of “finding your “yes”” at the 2025 psychedelic conference this Friday, March 7, in West Jordan, Utah. If facilitators and practitioners and know what “yes” feels like, they can better detect a true “yes” in clients and patients. If clients and patients can identify their “yes” they can make more informed decisions about what treatments and experiences they are ready for and will benefit from.
