We had great weather yesterday to welcome #PennState President Neeli Bendapudi and Vice President for Penn State Research Andrew Read for a tour of the test track facility. The tour included a trolley ride through the durability course, another ride in the Smart Mobility Lab's #AutonomousVehicle with XianBiao (XB) Hu, a display of the Intelligent Vehicles and Systems Group's mapping vehicle with Sean Brennan, and a showcase of the students in the Penn State Advanced Vehicle Team (who recently competed and did very well in year three of the AutoDrive Challenge II!). Year 3 of the GM-SAE AutoDrive Challenge II is now complete. What it is - The five year partnership between GM and SAE places 10 selected University Teams (8 US / 2 CAN) in competition with aim of developing/demonstrating an autonomous vehicle (AV) that can navigate urban driving courses as described by SAE Standard J3016 – Level 4. Static Challenges (Project Management, Concept Design, Mobility Innovation, and Simulation) throughout the year culminate with the Dynamic Challenge of on-course competition each June. How to Start - ?GM provides a vehicle (MY22 Bolt EUV) to each Student Team to serve as their development platform.?The provided vehicle is production level albeit slightly modified for school/school use (E-Stop, etc).?Additional sponsors provide LIDAR, GNSS, some additional sensors, processors, vehicle interface tools, tool carts, etc.?In short, a “Starter Pack” of key elements for success.?The competition landscape is Mcity (University of Michigan’s Autonomous Urban Proving Ground). How to Succeed - Success is determined by which student teams can best combine their hardware, software, and leadership talents to create an autonomous system that can successfully navigate intersections, traffic signs/lights, and railroad crossings while halting/avoiding obstacles such as pedestrians, wildlife, and opposing traffic.?Each year the performance requirements increase along the “Crawl, Walk, Run” approach. This year all teams brought their best effort and resulted in some outstanding performances.?The spirit of Co-opetition is strong as many teams have helped other teams throughout the academic year due to their desire to “Compete Against All” Why – AutoDrive provides students many opportunities to grow their leadership and problem-solving skills in a driven, challenging environment.?AutoDrive encourages engineers to gain cross-functional skills.?Hardware engineers learn what software code/tools can do as well as Software engineers learn about the hardware that executes their work.?The result is more engaged and more effective engineers capable of fearlessly taking on the challenges in their future Congratulations to all teams – Texas A&M, North Carolina A&T, Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ohio State, University of Wisconsin, Michigan Tech, Kettering University, University of Toronto, and Queens University

We've had a great time this week at Mcity watching all the college teams working hard at this year's SAE International's AutoDrive Challenge II. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to tell us how crucial our HD maps were in developing an accurate self-driving system. We agree -- HD maps are an essential ingredient! #autodrivechallenge #openroad #urban #highway #hdmap #hdmaps #driverassistance #driverassistancesystems #proud #sponsorship #sae #saeintl #autodrivechallengeII #competition #college #us #canada
