Sage wisdom from our own JP Nicols:
I help FIs counter irrelevance risk with industry-leading tools and programs | Cofounder @ Alloy Labs | Cohost @ Breaking Banks fintech podcast | #UnbreakTheBank
Unbreak the Bank: Marketing is an Investment, Not a Expense ?? Here's what separates growth-minded banks from the pack: They don't ask "how little can we spend on marketing?" They ask "how can marketing drive measurable growth?" Modern agile companies don't launch massive annual campaigns based on gut feelings. They run continuous small experiments, measure results, stop the ones that don’t work, and double down on the ones that do. They treat marketing like a portfolio of investments, not a necessary evil. One community bank claimed that their customer acquisition cost dropped 62% while conversion rates tripled after they shifted from newspaper and billboard advertising to weekly digital experiments with clear KPIs. I can’t verify those particular numbers, but they seem directionally correct from what we have seen. They didn't spend more— they spent smarter. The secret? Stop thinking like a traditional bank marketer ("we need brand awareness") and start thinking like a digital investor ("what's my expected return on this spend?"). What experiment could you run next week with just 10% of your marketing budget? #UnbreakTheBank #banking #marketing #GSBDBS25

What separates thriving fintech ecosystems from the rest? A mindset of collaboration and clarity. On the new episode of Breaking Banks, Meghan Kolber of @usbank explains why successful innovation hubs don’t just appear—they are intentionally built through partnerships between startups, industry leaders, academia, and policymakers. The key? ?? Defining clear objectives—whether it’s innovation, talent development, or scaling new solutions. ?? Creating spaces where diverse perspectives can meet and evolve. ?? Committing to open-minded collaboration that drives real change.
