?? This week, I am thrilled to join the 12th Economist World Ocean Summit in Tokyo, Japan, where I’ll be speaking on the panel titled "30x30: Scaling up and the art of the possible" on March 13th. This panel, supported by Blancpain, tackles the monumental task of protecting 30% of our oceans by 2030, as outlined in the UN’s Global Biodiversity Framework. With only five years left and currently less than 3% of the ocean fully protected, the urgency for innovative solutions has never been greater. We’ll discuss the essential steps to identify new protected areas, enhance governance and financing mechanisms, and accelerate progress in both national waters and the high seas. I’m honored to be joined by esteemed colleagues, including Peter Thomson, UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, Emanuel Gon?alves Chief Scientis at Oceano Azul Foundation Virgil Zetterlind Protected Seas IUCN Protected and Conserved Areas Additionally, I am looking forward to facilitating the "BBNJ workshop “ How to realise the opportunities for small island developing states under the BBNJ Agreement " on March 13th at 15.00 - 16.30 JST with the World Maritime University focusing on practical approaches to ocean governance. Let’s make waves together for our one ocean ???? #WorldOceanSummit #30x30 #OceanConservation #IUCN #Biodiversity #100%SustainablyManagedOcean

Our mission is to develop innovative technology solutions to support ocean conservation globally.
关于我们
ProtectedSeas began in 2015 with a mission to develop innovative technology solutions that promote awareness of vital marine protected areas. Now, the ProtectedSeas team has developed the most comprehensive resource of regulatory information of marine protected areas worldwide and a unique marine monitoring technology that enhances awareness of and compliance with ocean protections, the ProtectedSeas Navigator and the Marine Monitor (M2). ProtectedSeas Navigator is a publicly available dataset of boundaries and regulations for marine protected areas (MPAs) and marine managed areas (MMAs) globally. Navigator contains regulatory information for 22,000 marine protected areas, in 200 countries & territories, with translations in 25 languages. Marine Monitor (M2) is a low-cost radar system that provides situational awareness of human use in and around nearshore marine managed areas. M2 provides continuous data collection year-round without interruption. It is 100% autonomous. Our team includes a talented mix of software developers, attorneys, GIS specialists, and communications and engagement experts with backgrounds in marine science. ?? What do we actually know of regulations and activities' occurence in EU MPAs? My next PhD paper is out! Using publicly available data on EU MPAs’ regulations for nine activities, we found that: ?? MPA and MSP databases display significant gaps in data comprehensiveness ??Regulations for each activity was known in 40% or less of the MPA area (whether allowed, prohibited, or restricted), except for fishing activities (70% of MPA area), albeit with limited detail. ??Fishing, mining, or dredging/dumping activities were allowed in half of MPA area. ??Only mining was reported as prohibited in at least 10% of the MPA area. ??Check out the article for discussion on reporting requirements and challenges, and for our recommendations to improve the collection and standardization of legal indicators! ???? March 1st marks World Seagrass Day, a time to recognize the vital role seagrass ecosystems play in supporting marine biodiversity and maintaining water quality. However, these ecosystems are under increasing pressure. Made possible through funding from the Anthropocene Institute, the Seagrass Restoration Handbook provides restoration teams with a comprehensive resource for planning and implementing successful projects. It draws on lessons from the Elkhorn Slough restoration, where seagrass expanded 85 times beyond its original planting area, showcasing the success of targeted restoration efforts. The handbook provides step-by-step strategies for site selection, planting, and long-term monitoring, with detailed guidance on the garden staple method, a proven technique for securing seagrass transplants. The accompanying instructional video further demonstrates how to apply the garden staple method effectively in the field. ?? Explore the handbook: https://lnkd.in/dzS4rhKi ?? Harnessing the power of good data! For the last 9 years, CMSF has used M2 as a marine domain awareness tool, providing data analysis that supports enforcement partners, including California Department of Fish and Wildlife in monitoring fishing activity in and around marine protected areas. M2 fills an important data gap by tracking smaller vessels fishing near, and sometimes in, marine protected areas. These vessels often do not transmit AIS, presenting a unique challenge to the already overburdened enforcement teams responsible for monitoring the coast with limited personnel and resources. With so few officers covering such a large area, tools like M2 play a critical role in improving situational awareness, helping enforcement partners focus their efforts where they are most needed. #MarineResourceProtection #ProtectWhatYouLove #MPAMonday
