Our partners will always be an integral part of our success. I post this message as the appointed Personal Protection Specialist Representative of the Private Security Services Advisory Board (PSSAB) at the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (VA-DCJS). The PSSAB advocates for the private security services and supports the VA-DCJS who continues to professionalize an industry that has over 60,000 registered/active private security professionals throughout Virginia. Earlier this year, the PSSAB engaged the VA DCJS with creating some initiatives to incentivize and assist retiring law enforcement professionals interested in transitioning their valued professional law enforcement experience to the private security services industry in Virginia. The challenge observed by all was the need to provide a space that answers questions for those who choose to enter the security industry as entrepreneurs and/or providers of security services for established organizations. Additionally, their was a need to explain the various requirements and waivers that are afforded to law enforcement professionals entering in this field. I am happy to report that the merits were well received by the PSSAB who saw the benefits to be gained. A big thank you to Division Director Aubrey Granderson, MPA and her team, who in July of this year, created a space on the DCJS website providing valuable insight to retired law enforcement professionals seeking guidance on the requirements and waivers for the private security services in Virginia. Waivers exist for nearly all the private security service categories; however, it is often challenging for those transitioning from federal law enforcement to match the necessary requirements for the waivers due to differing records that are provided by local ands state law enforcement professionals for the waivers. For those retiring from federal law enforcement, even if not thinking of entering this industry, I would recommend the following: 1. Obtain all training records available to you. The majority of federal law enforcement professionals attend the Federal Law Enforcement training Center (FLETC). It is recommended request both, FLETC {https://lnkd.in/ew_r4bug and your agency's training record which will be cumulative throughout your career. 2. Obtain at least 5 years of firearms training record for hand gun and long range weapon systems. This will support firearms training waivers as long as it meets the VA statutory requirement and the guidelines of the VA DCJS. 3. Obtain all SF-50 containing your time of service and specifics about the position you held. 4. Obtain copies of performance appraisals which often has your job series and the job function description.
