PPH volunteers celebrated Hawai?i’s Arbor Day by planting native trees in Pia Valley. Among them was Pam Adams, an Arizona resident and visiting volunteer who chose to give back to the community while vacationing in Hawai?i. “I think it’s very important to understand the land and the culture because we can’t just keep taking and taking,” she said. “We have to give back because, as humans, we have choices: to either be part of the problem or part of the solution. Coming here to learn about the history, culture, and land is all part of the solution.” This Arbor Day celebration also marked the fourth anniversary of PPH’s volunteer program. Over the past four years, volunteers have outplanted more than 11,000 trees and plants in Pia Valley. Arbor Day is a great opportunity to get people outside to reconnect with the land and each other. This event isn’t just about planting trees, it’s about teaching future generations how to mālama ?āina. This project was made possible by the support of the Kaulunani Urban and Community Forestry Program of the DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife, and the Urban & Community Forestry Program of the U.S.D.A. Forest Service, Region 5, State and Private Forestry.
