Jessie Diggins, considered the greatest US Nordic skier in history, was featured in The Guardian! Jessie discussed POW and the importance of being cross-partisan on climate change. "Diggins is a board member of Protect Our Winters (POW), one of the largest climate advocacy groups in the world. She is integral in training other athletes to become effective climate advocates, using their personal stories to open the door for policy conversations with US senators and representatives from both sides of the aisle.'” Jessie sums up using her platform for imperfect advocacy perfectly. “I have a super privileged life. I fly over to Europe to race. I use electricity and have a carbon footprint. I try to offset all of it, but I’m not perfect and I own that. But being imperfect doesn’t mean you have to stop talking.” Read the full article below. https://lnkd.in/gx-tywMb

Republicans won the Senate, House, and Presidency. Regardless of election results, the tireless work for clean air, clean water, and a sustainable planet for future generations doesn’t stop. We believe apathy is the enemy. At POW, we’re taking action by translating how the new administration’s policies will impact our environment and empowering the Outdoor State—the 175 million outdoor enthusiasts across the U.S.—to get involved. Together, we can make a lasting impact through clean energy initiatives, protecting public lands from exploitation, and activating in our local communities. In the meantime, educating yourself is essential. Dive into free resources like our Climate Advocates Guidebook https://lnkd.in/gjrZdFat Our Crux Academy course helps to build on your knowledge of how we got here, and what we can do next: https://lnkd.in/gXEYVv3N Photos by Chris Shane

These are the places we fight relentlessly to protect. We’re still here, and we will keep showing up for our planet. Nature shapes who we are, and we’re determined to protect it—not only for ourselves but for future generations. Here’s how we’re taking bold action for the planet: Protecting Public Lands. Together with The Outdoor State, we’re ensuring that cherished public lands, from Alaska to Colorado, remain shielded from harmful fossil fuel extraction. https://lnkd.in/eGi2PjWd Driving Policy Change. Real change happens at the policy level. It’s not enough to fight on the ground; we need to fight at the highest levels of government. We helped in passing the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, the most significant climate legislation in U.S. history.?https://lnkd.in/e8R4c2eW We believe in the power of stories.? Stories have the power to move people, to spark change, and to create deep, personal connections to the climate crisis. That’s why we amplify the voices of those who are living the reality of climate change every day—from Indigenous communities on the frontlines to scientists and activists who are working tirelessly for solutions.?https://lnkd.in/edVMcszk Knowledge is power.? We work with scientists across the globe to educate our Alliance members and communities about the facts of climate change through resources like our Climate Advocates Guidebook and our free online course with Crux Academy that breaks down Climate Advocacy 101.?https://lnkd.in/gjrZdFat Get outside, feel the power of being in nature, and remember: we’re in this together. Let’s keep standing up to protect what we love. Photo 1: Jake Burchmore Photo 2: Anthony Bello Photo 3: Jeremiah Watt Photo 4: Adam Clark

Here’s a message from our team and CEO, Erin Sprague By now, you’ve seen the headlines: Donald Trump has won the presidency, and Republicans control the Senate. The House race is ongoing. We remain committed to bipartisanship, and we must face the threat the incoming administration poses to the climate emergency and our hard-won progress. The Threats to Our Mission: ? Trump has called climate change a “hoax.” ? Trump backed out of the Paris Agreement (the global agreement on emissions reductions). ? Trump rolled back sections of the Clean Air Act. ? Trump promised big oil and campaign supporters to “drill baby drill.” ? Trump stated he would halt offshore wind energy on “day one” if elected. ? Trump stated he would “gut” the EPA. ? Trump stated he would rescind unspent clean energy funding from the Inflation Reduction Act (despite significant actual and potential job creation in red states). What You Can Do Now: ?? Acknowledge that the system is messed up: Take some time to process and honor anything you’re feeling. Get outside for some fresh air–it’s the best reminder of why we do this work and what’s at stake. There will be answers and actions in the coming days. ?? Check-in on your people: For the past few months, we’ve asked you to text three friends to vote. Now, we’re asking you to once again show up for each other. Some people are not okay–we are here for each other as a community of outdoor lovers. We will debate, not spread hate, as we move forward together. ?? Tapping out is not an option: Going into this election, we prepared for any outcome. The top thing you can do is stay engaged as we remain resolute in our mission to pass emissions-reducing policies at the federal, state, or local level. This is personal for us–we are doing this for the future of our children, our communities, and our wild places. Gratitude for Showing Up: First, we want to honor one of our longest-standing athletes, Caroline Gleich, for stepping into the arena. Caroline ran a substantive campaign for the Senate in Utah with grit, poise, diligence, and excellence. We believe she changed the conversation, and her example will motivate more of us to engage and maybe even run in future local, state, and federal elections (hint hint). Thank you, Caroline, for teaching us that the path to positive change is action over apathy. Before we get back to work, we also want to honor you, the Outdoor State, for Stoking the Vote. You showed up for film festivals, trail runs, social posts, Strava challenges, vote tripling parties, and more to help get people to the polls. We are athletes–we know that sometimes, even when we show up with courage and skill, we don’t always reach the top. We also know that we’ll get another shot, and we are at our best when the conditions are the hardest. If you’re with us, the Outdoor State rides at dawn. Photo by MING POON

We need every skier, climber, hiker, surfer, runner, cyclist, and outdoor enthusiast to show up like the future of our wild places depends on it—because it does. If you haven’t already, it's time to head to the polls. Thank you to our incredible alliance members and Team POW for stepping up and speaking out to protect the places we all love.
