As we celebrate International Women’s Day, let us also spotlight the legal restrictions still limiting women’s right to choose work in India. With states moving towards deregulation, removing these barriers is critical to realising the #ViksitBharat vision. In 2022, our State of Discrimination report ranked 23 states on sex-based legal restrictions across 48 Acts, 169 Rules, and 20 Notifications/Orders—assessing four key freedoms -- to work at night, to work in jobs deemed hazardous, to work in jobs deemed arduous, and to work in jobs deemed morally inappropriate.
