As January wraps up, we're still thinking about 2024 and feeling even more energized for what’s ahead in 2025. Looking back, three extraordinary transformations stand out: ?? A musician’s basement reimagined as a cozy concert hall. ?? A "slightly slanty" historic porch brought back to level perfection. ?? A dream home renovation that would make The Jetsons jealous. These weren’t just renovation projects—they were stories of creativity, problem-solving, and the kind of craftsmanship that makes us jump out of bed each morning. So grab a cup of coffee (or maybe a blueprint), and let’s walk through the projects that pushed us to think outside the box and build inside the lines. Let’s talk about Big Home Remodeling Projects: 1. Whatever your total budget is for any project (flooring, bathroom or kitchen) cut it in half. 50% will go to materials and 50% will go to labor. 2. Now that you’ve dialed in your budget you need to select materials. An expert in flooring, kitchen and bathroom materials can help with that. 3. Take samples home to the space and look at them in your house. Look at it in the lighting, compare wood cabinets or flooring to the trim you have on the base board. Compare cabinetry, countertops, tile, plumbing fixtures to your appliances. What do you want to be the statement piece? Do you want a more modern look or a more traditional timeless look? 4. After you’ve selected materials work with your salesperson to get an accurate estimate w/ lead times and find a good installer. Shop the labor and get 2-3 estimates and compare. Your salesperson can help review the labor estimates if you have any questions and want an unbiased eye. There are ways to save money on labor, for example tearing out your own carpet and pad and moving furniture can often save more than $1,000 on a flooring project. 5. Now it’s time to purchase. You need to think about when you need the project done by and reverse engineer your timeline from that date. Factors to consider: 1. Contractor availability and scheduling 2. Material lead times 3. Living with disruption in your home temporarily depending on how large the project is. Your sales person can guide you through the buying process. Ask for all maintenance/care instructions, manufacturer’s warranty and installation instructions and share them with your contractor. 6. Now let’s talk payment. You can pay it out of pocket with cash/check/card but this can get very expensive quickly. Reviewing suitable financing options can be a good fourth option. There are many programs out there that can give you deferred interest up to 12-18 months depending on the retailer and wholesaler. Meaning if you pay off the materials in the allotted amount of time you pay zero interest. The credit application process is smooth and easy. Also if your budget is tight financing can open up your selections to get exactly what you want while easing the burden of paying 50% down or paying in full upfront. To summarize: Projects are expensive Projects are stressful Projects take time Contractors are busy There are lots of moving parts Plan for all of that. If I can help in anyway please reach out.
