The 2016 US presidential election was a wakeup call to me that something is seriously amiss in America's democracy. Since then, I have become convinced that the most important root cause of American political dysfunction and polarization is our system of political institutions, and I am part of an emerging grassroots movement to change these institutions for the better. One of the most impactful reforms would be to elect House of Representative members using proportional representation, which would end the two-party duopoly on power and create a dynamic in Congress that rewards collaboration rather than hardball competition. Yesterday Vox released a terrific nine-minute explainer of the idea. PR makes sense in state legislatures, too, which is why I have joined the board of the ProRep Coalition to work to bring multi-party democracy to California. American politics can be depressing, but I believe that the potential of reform provides reason to be optimistic.
