Journalism in the public interest. And no, we're not shutting up.

关于我们

ProPublica is an independent, nonprofit newsroom that produces investigative journalism with moral force. We dig deep into important issues, shining a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust — and we stick with those issues as long as it takes to hold power to account. With a team of more than 75 dedicated journalists, ProPublica covers a range of topics including government and politics, business, criminal justice, the environment, education, health care, immigration, and technology. We focus on stories with the potential to spur real-world impact. Among other positive changes, our reporting has contributed to the passage of new laws; reversals of harmful policies and practices; and accountability for leaders at local, state and national levels. Investigative journalism requires a great deal of time and resources, and many newsrooms can no longer afford to take on this kind of deep-dive reporting. As a nonprofit, ProPublica’s work is powered primarily through donations. The vast bulk of the money we spend goes directly into world-class, award-winning journalism. We are committed to uncovering the truth, no matter how long it takes or how much it costs, and we practice transparent financial reporting so donors know how their dollars are spent. ProPublica was founded in 2007-2008 with the belief that investigative journalism is critical to our democracy. Our staff remains dedicated to carrying forward the important work of exposing corruption, informing the public about complex issues, and using the power of investigative journalism to spur reform.

This weekend, I watched a feature documentary on a topic that impacts so many people: stillbirth. "Before a Breathe" shines light onto this taboo topic, and brings to the forefront the life-long grief that stillbirth can cause for many families. Every year, more than 20,000 pregnancies in the U.S. end in a stillbirth, the death of an expected child at 20 weeks or more of pregnancy. Research shows at least 1 in 4 stillbirths may be preventable. The U.S. ranks as one of the worst among wealthy countries in reducing its stillbirth rate. Watching this documentary is an emotional journey, but it's an important watch. This documentary is directed by the incredibly talented Nadia Sussman at ProPublica. I encourage you to take the time to see the stories of these brave women. https://lnkd.in/gn4ACQWJ

National Cancer Institute employees received internal guidance to flag communications for scrutiny if they addressed “controversial, high profile, or sensitive” topics. Among the 23 hot-button issues: vaccines, fluoride, peanut allergies and autism. The list touches on the personal priorities of Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. All materials must be reviewed by an institute “clearance team,” according to the records, and could be examined by officials at the National Institutes of Health or the HHS, its umbrella agency. In confirmation hearings in January, Kennedy said that as secretary, he would not discourage people from getting immunized for measles or polio, but he dodged questions about the link between autism and vaccines. The NCI, the NIH and HHS did not respond to ProPublica’s emailed questions. Read the full story: https://propub.li/4hAr57M (Photo illustration by Andrea Wise/ProPublica. For the past two years the team at ProPublica has been working to shine a light on the stillbirth crisis in the U.S., the impact it has on families, and what is being done to prevent preventable stillbirths. Their new documentary, "Before a Breath," premiered this week. It covers the stories of three mothers who personally experienced the tragedy of stillbirth and what they are doing to impact change for other families. We encourage you to watch and share this documentary with others to be part of the change to improve birth outcomes. https://lnkd.in/g2FVaz-4?
