“I want my security analysts to be security analysts, not data analysts.” That is a direct quote from a recent call with a CISO of a F500 company. Why? Their team was spending an inordinate amount of time retrieving and correlating data from various sources based on their incident response playbooks. As a result, they are facing low morale and high attrition. Attempts to automate enrichment using SOAR tools have yielded limited results, largely due to upfront investment and ongoing maintenance required by SOAR tools. The CISO said it best, “SOAR has not lived up to its promise.” It is not surprising that Gartner put a ? (Obsolete before plateau) on SOAR in their latest Hype Cycle for Security Operations, 2024.
