On the eve of the 46th Consultative Meeting of Contracting Parties to the London Convention/19th Meeting of Parties to the London Protocol, Ocean Visions calls upon delegates to refrain from acting on a draft resolution to add additional marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) techniques to Annex 4 of London Protocol. Such action would risk undermining critical research, development, & demonstration (RD&D) efforts, which are essential for assessing the safety and effectiveness of mCDR. It could also disrupt ongoing international efforts under the UNFCCC and IPCC to set clear rules and guidance on carbon removal techniques employed to achieve the Paris Agreement targets. Rather than slowing needed research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of marine carbon removal, we need to prioritize comprehensive RD&D, and this includes the private sector’s pivotal role in driving innovation. Multisectoral collaboration is key to advancing scientific knowledge in this emerging field. ? Clean firm power is at the center of the climate conversation today. At Propeller, we’ve been building a thesis on the intersection of the ocean and the energy transition – whether it’s powering, transmitting, or storing technologies that will help reach our skyrocketing demands for electricity. When I met Jake Jurewicz and Matthew Slotkin, I was taken by their ambitious vision for bringing nuclear power to coastal environs with speed and cost efficiencies through small modular reactors (SMRs). Their company, Blue Energy, intends to leverage shipyards that have the capabilities and human capital to safely build a new American industry. Jake and the Blue Energy team are deep subject matter experts that operate with a vigor and determination that makes us at Propeller proud to support this vision and incredible team.
