--?Philadelphia shipyard recently floated a 500-foot ship that next year will provide Texas A&M University at Galveston with instructional spaces for as many as?600 maritime academy cadets.? Workers at the Hanwha Philly Shipyard towed the training ship Lone Star State from its dry dock in late January and will spend another 12 months getting the ship ready to deliver, according to the university. Lone Star State will provide students pursuing maritime certifications with a modern, sea-going training facility beginning in 2026, according to the university. The ship will also have modern hospital facilities, a helicopter pad, cargo access and can accommodate up to 1,000 people during humanitarian aid missions, according to the university. “This ship will allow the Texas A&M Maritime Academy to support and increase the state’s capabilities and resources for disaster relief efforts,” the university said in a statement. Congress approved $325 million to construct the ship in December 2020. The Texas A&M Maritime Academy offers training to students enrolled in several academic programs to prepare them to earn a U.S. Coast Guard license to serve as maritime personnel at sea and onshore, or in military service upon graduation. Training vessels like the Lone Star State serve as a living laboratory for those students to earn year-round hands-on experience in ship navigation and marine engineering systems, maintenance, safety and security. Cadets now train aboard the TS Kennedy, which the university is using in place of the Lone Star State until it arrives next year. State academy training vessels are federally owned and available to support federal response efforts to national and international disasters. The Lone Star State is the fourth in a series of five National Security Multi-Mission Vessels.
