Making it easy to transition to agroforestry, profitably.

关于我们

Propagate is a software, development and financing ecosystem that makes it easy for farms to transition acreage to agroforestry. Their platform provides access to agronomic insights, technical assistance, and financing so that farms can reduce risk while integrating fruit, nut and timber trees with animal or crop farming systems. By helping farms incorporate permanent crops using regenerative agriculture practices, known as agroforestry, farms can increase profitability while stewarding climate solutions. Founded in 2017, Propagate is a venture-backed company with investors such as The Nest, Agfunder, TELUS Pollinator Fund for Good, The Grantham Foundation, Techstars and Elemental Excelerator as well as a partner of USDA's Partnerships for Climate Smart Commodities. Propagate currently advises 30,000+ acres of agroforestry, supporting over 760,000 trees & shrubs. Propagate also actively manages over 2250 commercial acres, and growing, through its regional agroforestry hubs in NY and KY.

In just 7 years, we’ve planted over 211,000 trees and shrubs across 30+ farms. These projects prove the potential of agroforestry: Creating better outcomes for farmers, returns for investors, and measurable benefits to ecosystems and communities. Planting productive trees on farmland creates a powerful blend of economic and ecological returns for farmers, investors, and the surrounding communities. However, the availability of funding and technical support can stifle projects of significant scale. Fortunately, there are examples of how to overcome these challenges. We’re excited to share how at the Regenerative Food Systems Investment forum next week. We’ll dig into the story of the largest agroforestry project in the United States, Hill Farm, where over 1,800 acres was transitioned to agroforestry in the last 2.5 years.

What does it take to meaningfully scale agroforestry? There’s no better opportunity to learn than this year’s Regenerative Food Systems Investment Forum! Next week I'll share the story behind the largest agroforestry project in the United States. Propagate and Agroforestry Partners have transitioned nearly 2,000 acres in the last 2 years at Hill Farms in KY. ?? Spoiler alert: Partnerships are critical to meaningful scale. Partnerships are why I'll be sharing the stage to walk through making this project a success. Looking forward to telling the story with Keavin Hill, Sara Balawajder, Brett Hundley, CFA, and Caesaré Assad. Learn more and register here: https://lnkd.in/ezdM4vKg

Planting trees that thrive starts with proper site preparation. Catch up with our team on-site and Dennis Derryck, founder of Corbin Hill Food Project and now General Partner of Corbin Hill Road Farm, LLC. to see site preparation work and layout for an upcoming spring agroforestry planting. The pleasant weather this September allowed our team to get the subsoiling, tilling and seeding done in two efficient days of work. They seeded a fairly heavy rate of oats and peas that will put on some nice growth this fall, helping the farm to build organic matter and stabilize the soil. Intensive agriculture is one of the main contributors to global biodiversity loss. How can regenerative practices like agroforestry help? We aim to find out.. Propagate recently contracted a third party to collect biodiversity data across 20 sample sites on 2 farms in Mason county, Kentucky. The sites were selected based on production crops and system age: a chestnut-hay agroforestry system was benchmarked against a conventional soy baseline.?These measurements will help us understand the impact of agroforestry practices on local ecology. What did we learn? Check out the link in the comments to find out. We’ll frame the significance of our findings by sharing more on why we believe this work is critical, how the study was conducted, and what we’ve learned through the process. Related: the #WorldBiodiversitySummit starts today, coinciding with #ClimateWeekNYC. We hope to see more discussions around regenerative agriculture, and agroforestry.

?? Let's talk soil health, and why the adoption of practices to prioritize it are slow in gaining traction. Healthy soils allow producers to reduce erosion, maximize water infiltration, improve nutrient cycling, save money on inputs, and ultimately improve the resiliency of their working land. Healthy soil = more profit. However, changing management practices to prioritize soil health is not an easy transition — nor is it as widely incentivized. That's why we're excited to be hosting a New York Soil Health?workshop next week to talk soils & pastures at Ramble On. Attendees will learn how two Finger Lakes farms strive to increase the resiliency and profitability of their soils and operations through a suite of regenerative practices, such as establishing multi-purpose trees, silvopasture, cropland conversion to pastures, and bale grazing. This event is part of the 2024 Soil Health and Climate Resiliency Field Days, offering valuable insights and hands-on demonstrations to enhance soil health. Learn more in the comments

Looking for a thoughtful discussion around agroforestry, it's place in our society, and the different reasons that lead farms to planting trees? Harry Greene just sat down with Permaculture Institute of North America for a chat on the macro level forces shaping adoption of agroforestry practices, and examples of the decision making we see farms making that shape their application of them. ?? Listen here: https://lnkd.in/gmX2D5mf Consider saving for a long drive or upcoming trip, especially those heading to #climateweeknyc.

Getting more trees in the ground that thrive and support farms can be challenging, especially without widespread access to quality tree genetics at low prices. That is why we’re pleased to announce the launch of a retail page for nursery stock and inputs. Our projects across the Eastern U.S. have given us the opportunity to plant and monitor hundreds of thousands of trees from a variety of partners. We wanted to take what we've learned and share it, making easy for farms of all sizes to order the same high-quality trees that we have come to trust. We’re starting with Chinese chestnut & Black locust, two species we have seen great progress with in a number of agroforestry applications. More species will be added over time. ??
