I spoke with the founder of a $50M brand. Their advice changed my view on growth. If you’re in the early days of your business, listen up. Here are the 5 non-negotiables for scalable growth that I wish I knew at $1M. 1) More Stores Don’t Equal More Success At $1M, we thought getting into more stores was the key. By $10M, we learned it’s about the right stores. Chasing big accounts can waste time and money. Focus on partnerships that boost your brand, not just shelf space. 2) Marketing Must Show Results At $1M, we spent on ads without tracking what worked. By $10M, we learned to measure every dollar spent. If you can’t track it, don’t waste your budget. Invest in what works, not just what’s trendy. 3) Hire for Growth, Not Just Numbers At $1M, we hired quickly to fill gaps. By $10M, we understood hiring for fit is key. A small, strong team beats a large, scattered one. Invest in processes and systems early or face tough challenges later. 4) Say NO More Often At $1M, we said yes to every opportunity. By $10M, we realized the power of saying no. Focus on what aligns with your goals. Every yes can dilute your energy and resources. 5) Cash Flow Is King At $1M, we celebrated revenue without knowing our cash flow. By $10M, we kept a close eye on expenses. Revenue looks good, but cash flow is the lifeblood of your brand. Protect it fiercely. These lessons are about focus and discipline. I made mistakes too, but I learned and adapted.
