Pro Kids, First Tee - San Diego's mission is to challenge underserved youth to excel in life by promoting character development, life skills, and values through education and the game of golf. At Pro Kids, we believe in developing opportunities that are just as fun as they are meaningful, where kids feel excited to grow, safe to fail, and better equipped for whatever comes their way next. Through our Golf & Life Skills, Pro Kids Academy, and Pro Kids Scholarship programs, our members experience unique opportunities, consistent support, and character-building to give them the tools for a successful future. Pro Kids was founded in 1994 by former AFL/NFL player Ernest H. Wright, Sr., and a group of community leaders, who saw the game of golf as a way to help underserved youth develop the character and life skills required to find success in school and in life. In 2012, a second location was opened in Oceanside. Ernie passed in 2007, but his passion for helping kids succeed in life continues. Since 1994, we have seen more than 25,000 kids’ lives transformed through values intrinsic to the game of golf – honesty, confidence, and respect. Pro Kids is part of First Tee, an international youth development organization founded by the PGA and other associations to advance the game of golf. First Tee modeled much of the founding programming after Pro Kids and in 1998, Pro Kids became a charter member, adopting the name Pro Kids, First Tee – San Diego.

The Ninth Ernie Wright Cup Matches at Pro Kids While the spotlight of the sporting world was turned to the venues across Paris and the 33rd Summer Olympic Games, a small, quiet, event was competed in the heart of San Diego and the verdant hillsides of Rancho Santa Fe: The Ernest H. Wright Cup Matches. This was the ninth playing of the Matches between the two Pro Kids "campuses" in City Heights and Oceanside. Inaugurated in 2012, the matches are played by a select group of junior golfers representing each of the two campuses. Teams are small, just six players on each side. Being selected to represent the Oceanside or City Heights team, the juniors must fulfill a number of requirements having more to do with their service to their community and intentional attention to their education, rather than their skills at golf. Golf skills do play their part. After all, the victorious team will proudly have the coveted Scotty Cameron Trophy displayed in the modest clubhouse at their home executive golf course until the following year's matches are contested. The format is patterned after the iconic Ryder Cup. The "Opening Ceremony" takes place on a Sunday evening at Dave & Busters. The juniors receive their team uniforms, packets with a letter welcoming them to the competition along with the itinerary and match pairings for two days of golf. Following the dinner at Dave & Busters, the juniors are given full rein to take on any and all games to earn enough tickets to trade for the simplest, yet exciting, prizes. The golf tournament begins at Colina Park in City Heights the next day, Monday. Two 18-hole rounds are played at match play. Each hole won by a team is worth a single point. Holes that are halved pay each team a half point. The first 18-hole format is a better ball of twosome with a total of 54 points to play for. Following a short lunch break, pairings are rearranged for the second 18-hole matches. The second 18 is split into two formats: front nine is a Pinehurst, the back nine a scramble. Once again 54 points are played for. After a day of rest, the final round singles matches move to The Bridges at Rancho Santa Fe. The players arrived at 11:00 in the morning, enjoyed lunch poolside at the Sports Centre, warmed up on the practice range, going to the first tee to compete one against one in the singles, 108 points on the line. Having never won the Championship since the opening of the Oceanside campus in 2014, there was a definite sense that this could finally be the year that the Oceanside David would finally slay the Colina Park Goliath. Stars do align, dreams do come true, waiting makes it even sweeter: FINAL Total: Oceanside 116 points - City Heights 100 points. The same joy in Paris atop a Gold Medal podium was celebrated by the juniors representing Oceanside. The happiness and joyfulness were apparent in their smiles and laughter, even more so in their eyes. The Scotty Cameron Trophy is now decorating the Oceanside clubhouse.
